Hello,

Currently, I am running PP Euro 5w40, but was thinking of making a switch to either a 5w30 or 0w40 oil for the winter. Or should I continue to run the 5w30? Will be driving in Canadian winters, with the lowest temps being around -5C (23F). The car is a 2014 335i.

Thanks!

Agreed, with that winter temp the PP Euro 5w-40 will have zero issues. We've already been down to -11c here in Minnesota and I've had no problems at startup. That's with running a thick 5w-40 as well, Total Quartz 9000 Energy. I will be however be switching to a Ravenol 0w-30 soon just as an experiment over the winter. As I had some startup issues last year with BMW TPT 5w-30 below -25c.

Since the 2018 revision to LL-01 (no more 0W oils on the list) I've been running PP Euro 5W40 in my F10 535. No "issues", but it's garaged overnight not outside. I'm Toronto-ish so the colder snaps get us down to the -20s without making the news, worse from time to time.

The PP Euro is on the thin side for a 5w40 and is GTL as well. For those temps there is simply no reason to switch.
