Rotella T Synthetic is a group III synth. It's not going to do anything a group II dino is going to do regarding leaks. Perhaps some of you might be seeing more weeping in the cold from it b/c it's thinner at start-up than the 15W40 you've been using?

BTW, have yet to see the new CJ formula even though the T Synthetic is now in the new bottles in my area. May just be slow-moving stock in my area, though.

Brian

I haven't seen the new CJ 5w-40 yet either. Their website still has it listed as CI-4. Are they even going to move it to CJ?

Shell promised it would be out in 2007 but no luck so far. Delvac has ESP 5W40 CJ oil out, though. And Motorcraft has it in 10W30.

It's a lot slower to come out then what I thought. I was guessing it would take over as the primary and it would be hard to find CI oil.

Delo, Castrol, and Amsoil have CJ too. I'm sure most everyone will have it soon.

Hi,
IMHO and as my guess, Shell is simply being sure that their product is "correct" in every sense, especially as to the Manufacturer Approvals they have

They are major Commercial suppliers and many Fleet users will simply use it across the board - in engines that may be nearing 30 years old for instance. They (Shell) could not afford to drop the ball!

I have seen this all before with some unhappy results!!!!

Hi Doug, have you ever seen a price on Rimula Ultra 5W-40 here ?
I priced it up once, only available in 44 gallon drums and IIRC about three times the price of D1.

The new bottles are out with the CI designation. Does this indicate that they will not be moving to CJ anytime soon if at all or do you think we will see the CJ formula in the near future?

It's only misinformation until you experience it yourself.

I understand when members report here weeps or leaks can appear overnight usually about 3 weeks after an oil brand change. The weeps can move around from rocker covers to crankcase at various times.

Mysteriously, after 2 or 3 OCI's they can begin to reduce or disappear completely. How or why I don't know, I keep an open mind.

jnyost, is correct I have read of many accounts of what happened to his vehicles as common when switching brands or to synthetic, as other forums are reporting similar symptoms.

It doesn't sound like a myth with such a wide audience making these claims, what is their gain in doing so ? As these individuals kept using the product that caused the weep or leak. Not a great way to sell a product.

Perhaps there is a technical scientific explanation, but the one I like is what’s stated above by another member "Its not uncommon for one to three oil change intervals while the new oil is cleaning and creating its own seal"

I have experienced it...from OLD Mobil 1 (back when it was packed with goodies) sitting for a long time in a vehicle that saw nothing but dino prior. But with Rotella T Synthetic Group III? Might as well say you're seeing it with Castrol GTX.

As for the technical, scientific explanation, new synthetics, especially these days, aren't renowned for their "cleaning" power. Their power to clean up a pre-existing deposits is not that great. And they don't create their own seal.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to come across as a jack-a.s.s. But there's a wealth of knowledge in the archives of this forum on all these topics. I urge y'all to take a while to read through it.

Same here....I've been scouring WalMarts stocking up on the "old" version only to find cases of the "new bottle" freshly stocked at Sams Club with the same old non CJ rating and for a lower price..

I had a slow but flowing leak on the arch of my oil pan on my 94 Land Cruiser and had several seeping leaks on the front end of the motor. I was using Rotella 15w40 HDEO.
When I switched to Rotella T 5w40 all the leaks went away. This was about 4 yrs ago and still no leaks.
I don't understand how I could have several leaks for a year and then have them 'go away' after switching to Rotella T Synthetic unless the Rotella T had some sort of swell sealer in it?????
The LandCruiser has 305,000 mi on it and no leaks (knock on fake wood dash)

Update: I recently changed the oil in my XR 650R from Honda conventional to Mobil 1 V Twin. The bike has approximatly 800mi on it when switched. The first couple of rides it smoked . It finally quit. It didn't smoke before switching to synthetic.
All usage and leaks have stopped on the Ford and Dmax and am STILL using Amsoil. Great oil.
