Anyone going to this race? Iam thinking about going this year, since Iam right here in Daytona. It sounds like a real race of endurance, 3 drivers for one car and they run it hard for 24 hours. I wouldnt think it would get any maintinence during the race, so it would really push the fluids to the max. I never paid much mind to it, until this year. Tickets sound cheap, about $30 for two days. Starts at noon on Sat and ends at noon on Sun. can come and go as you please. Anybody have more info on the race or ever went to one?

Wow I wish I lived where you did .... I used to watch those races on Speed every time they came on. Love the 24 hour races - especially the motorcycle ones. Listening to those engines is ... heaven.
You need to go at least once, especially since you live there. Nothing like it. Something special about watching a car go by at over 180 mph at 2:00 AM in the morning.
I was there three years ago and will be going again next year. You should also go the the 12 hours of Sebring.

You have it a little wrong. If they have a failure like say a transmission goes out they will rebuild it.
This kind of problem assures that you will not win but when a car develops a problem it is not out of the race unless it is wrecked beyond repair

Ok, thats what I want to know, I was thinking they ran these cars for 24 hours with only tire changes and driver changes. If the car blows its out. No oil changes or maintence during the race. I dont know that much about this race and the links tell me little. I can hear the cars from my backyard every year, but NASCAR over shadows that race in this town and the ROLEX does not get the same attention. Regardless Iam going to go over to the Racetrack, theres all kinda givaways before the race outside the track.
they will do pad swaps on pitstops usually around the 12hr mark. the Daytona Prototypes are pretty reliable. they are allowed to top off oil, i have seen them flush brake fluid on pitstops.
when Audi was first running at Le Mans, they found a loophole where they could change the trans midrace. they had it down to about 5 minutes for a complete transaxle swap. that was banned after a few years. reportedly they can rebuild the trans in about 10 minutes. corvette racing was saying they can do a trans rebuild in about 15 minutes.

I would have thought that they would have to do this more frequently than every 12 hours.
But maybe with the advent of carbon/carbon brakes, they are getting better mieage out of them?

For you NASCAR guys, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, and Juan Pablo are all entered in this race.
I've seen those CF brake jobs being done. The tech grabs the near red-hot CF disk with big oven mits and tosses it, slaps the pads in and calipers on in about 90 sec. Makes my 5 minute brake jobs seem amatuer.
i have the Bathurst 1000 on my DVR, and they were doing pad and rotor swaps pretty quick. you can save a lot of time on brake jobs when you dont have noise to worry about.

I think there are new RS6 GT cars coming on-line next year. Gotta love the 4-door executive sedans lapping the Corvettes and 7:8 scale CTS.
I have the race on now (Speed Channel) ... watching it here 'n there. I preferred IMSA too, as I like to see the different brands go head to head ... there's less of that in Rolex Grand-Am Daytona Prototypes.
Since there was no DAKAR this year, I guess this is all I get until F1 and other road racing begin in earnest.
