Besides performing, he mentored stars like Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm and Rick Danko, who went on to form one of the most influential groups of the rock era, the Band.

A buddy of mine was his nephew. I sent him my condolences when I heard it happened. Bit of a local legend around these parts, same with Neil Young.

I have a few CD's of old Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks music. Time to give them another listen. The song in the posted video is one of my all time favorites. A Bo Diddley original. The version on Quicksilver Messenger Service's second album, "Happy Trails" was legendary. Really enjoyed the Hawkins/Band version as well.
