I forgot he was in Mr. Belvedere... loved that show.
Just saw that. If you haven’t already, go to YouTube and see his HOF acceptance speech. Also, documentary I saw on MLB couple years ago. Laugh your a$$ off. And then, all the tonight show footage you can find.
He told a story how when he was catching Bob Gibson, a notorious fierce competitor, he went to the mound to talk about the next hitter. Before he got there Gibson snarled "what the hell do you want?" "Uh, nothing Bob, I was just on my way to say hi to the center-fielder."
It might have true, it might not have been but he was quite the character. What does get lost in all of this though is this; he was in the majors and that is no small accomplishment. He also was a guest on Johnny Carson 100 times. Also no small accomplishment!

People remember his humor and the beer commercials but the thing which stands out is the people who'd remind me (you) that Bob called baseball games 'straight'.
GOAT Listening to him was always a pretty big chunk of my summers. For probably 30 years.
