rims beyond hope?

All I see is some chrome plating peeling off. Nothing structural. I'd have no problem driving on it.
You could drive it on the rim, but I don't think it will hold any air because of where the bead sits is nasty.

I'd not feel comfortable with any member of my family driving on that rim.
Probably could save it with some wire wheel work and the product you mention below.
No way in its' current condition.
YMMV.
 
+2, hit it with the wire wheel, aluminum "erases" quickly.

Follow up with some sandpaper, 320 grit or so. It'll clog quickly too.

May not even need bead sealer, try it without. Those would make good "snow tire rims."
 
I had better looking snow rims that I trashed. One tire or another was either flat or low on air regularly. A tire shop could get it going again with rim seal but only until the next time. It was more of a nuisance than anything.

Chunks of paint would fall off here or there. I checked how much it would cost to have them sand/bead blasted and repainted and it was way more than they cost (or were worth).
