Right Oil For JD Tractor

I have been running 15W40 in my old JD 2520 diesel. (1972 model). Just the other day I was looking through the owners manual, and it says to use straight 30 weight above 32F and 10W30 below 32 F.

My question is, since this is an old tractor, and oil technology has improved over the last 30 years are the old recommendations still valid? Any harm in continuing to use 15W40?

I grew up on a farm and we ran straight 30 weight in all of our tractors, which just happened to be John Deeres.

Look at the VOA on JD oil.

JD is a true believer in big calcium numbers and moderate amounts of moly. John Deere oils are not expensive $6.50/gallon the last I looked.
