Hi,

My 98 Chevy S-10 ZR2 has 12 or so zerk fittings... some are easier to get to, others are tougher... Ive swapped one or two with right angle zerks, but at the end of the day, a right angle coupler would be a LOT easier.

I decided to swap from M1 grease to pennzoil moly grease earlier, and now from pennzoil moly to Mystik JT-6 standard grease, as it is much tacker and wont wasn otu easily liek the others. So I got the grease and an OEM industrial right angle coupler from tractor supply.

I cant get the stupid right angle coupler to work!

It is a coupler that looks almost like a standard straight on coupler with part of one side cut off. The zerk slides in, along a plastic internal liner, and then into a groove, which has the grease outlet lined up directly. OK, so I can do that, fine.

but EVERY single time that I squeeze in some grease, NONE goes into the zerk and into the boot, and all of it comes out around the zerk fitting. Ive tried and tested again and again, and everything is in there tight and lined up... I just cant get it.

Now, granted, even the straight on connector is harder to get grease into the fittings, now that Im using JT-6, as its tacker (and it was 36F outside, I guess), but that cant be the whle story.

It is really tough to work now... can anyone explain to me how to use a right angle grease gun coupling? Am i that dumb? I just dont get it... greasing should be one of the simplest tasks, and I am having one heck of a time doing it... I never used to.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

JMH

Try having a second person hold the grease gun and pump when you say so. You should hold the coupler and push it against the zerk fitting holding the coupler in one hand and the truck in the other. You have be able to feel it better than you can see it. But keep pumping (and wiping if you miss). You will get it.

Hmm: all the zerk fittings and the greash gun coupings I'v had kock together when SNAPPED together. Clogged zerk fitting or bad coupler?

Make sure that you aren't using a right angle coupling on a left handed zerk fitting, otherwise you'll need counter-clockwise grease.

Wire brush the zerks ..replace if necessary.

and 1ststruck ..that's "reverse rotational" grease. It's the current accepted nomenclature. Update your lexicon accordingly.

Hardened grease can sometimes also cause what your seeing, a bulldozer mechanic says he sometimes heats the zerk fittings with a torch to soften the grease. But if you have greased the fittings every year you should not have hardened grease. Also a true pump handle grease gun has more force than a trigger handle and a air operated grease gun has more force than a manual one. I am up to 3 grease guns for marine, tractor and other toys.
