I would say, when the plugs were brand new, taking into account that the "puck" was there when new, the original "factory" gap would have been .038 to .042 - because the gap was narrower, it will fire easily and there will be no misfires. however, the spark will not be quite as strong, so the engine might not be able to develop peak horsepower. but under most normal conditions, the engine would still run fine. the ECU however, will not be able to maintain optimum running conditions, because of the slight timing change from plug to plug, due to the difference in gap. However, now that I have put in new plugs, and even though the existing plugs were "within spec" - the new plugs run OBVIOUSLY better, which I attribute to the new plugs all being gapped EXACTLY THE SAME, which means the ECU does not have to compensate any more, for differing gaps. this is just my theory, i could be wrong, so please someone correct me.
