The other night while in Advance Auto, I spied Remy alternators and got to wondering if they are reliable? Also, are they same (or part of) Remy that's pitched in with Delco (Delco Remy)?

Delco Remy split off from GM in 1994 and they changed their name to Remy in 2004. Their aftermarket rebuilds come from Mexico and the new stuff comes from China. Pretty standard locations for all aftermarket suppliers. Dave

Gee, could that be one of the reasons we have no jobs left here now?

I have actually used them, and they are just as bad as any rebuilt alternator or starter that an auto part store writes its name on. And why so much love for Delco? I deal with more of their failed alternators than all other alternators. Even Bosch is better.

Needed an alternator for my Cavalier. I wanted NEW not rebuilt. Only new one I could source locally was a Remy from Pep Girls. No problems so far, installed three yrs ago. I paid twice as much to buy the new Remy vs a rebuilt one. One thing that puzzled me is that Pep wanted my old alternator for core or would charge deposit. I tried to explain to them that I bought a NEW alternator so why should I have to pay a core charge or return my used one? Probably the first time I bought a new part and had to give back my old part. Manager insisted that either I pay core or hand over the old alt. I capitulated and gave up my old alt, but will never buy from them again.

You are correct - new part should not equal core charge. I have bought new parts (water pump and an alternator) online before and never a core charge.

Absolutely right. If a reman is needed, better off giving a local shop the busieness. I get it that turnaround isnt as fast, but when doable, it keeps the $$$ in the local economy versus through a wage slave to China and a CEO.

I agree totally JHZ. Would've used a local shop to rebuild, but they are few and far between. Needed an alt asap to keep Cavalier on road. Used to be a few local shops that did rebuilds, most closed due to pricing pressure. Sad. I wanted a new alternator. I've been burnt too many times with inferior rebuilds. Alts, starters etc. Often times the rebuilt one was just as bad as the failed one I took off. Hate doing things twice. Cardinal: I can understand buying a new battery and turning in the old one to keep lead out of the environment. I wanted to keep my old alt and disassemble it just for curiosity and learning experience. If I buy new, I expect to keep the old parts. Let Pep get their cores from people who buy rebuilds, not new, that was my contention.

I know with Ford even the new parts have core charges. The new A/C Compressors generally dont because when they go there is very little that is worth salvaging. New engines direct off the factory line have massive core charges, Ford does not want them getting to the aftermarket. They even have cores on bumper covers, headlight and taillight housings to prevent rebuilders from doing inferior work and passing them off as new.

Many new parts now have core charges because the price of scrap metal has risen, so the part company wants to make money from that as well.

LOL... Yeah we had a dealer try to tell us that there was a core charge on a (new) catalytic converter we bought from them. The boss thought that was odd and called them on it... Come to find out the parts department was padding their bottom line with converters. Needless to say, we got the core charge dropped.

I have had some OEM cats with $500 cores on them. Ford at one time had cores on cats, any we replace under warranty generally must return to Ford. The DPFs on 08+ diesels have cores on them.

Mazda has core charges on water pumps. Ford has core charges on the drop in MAF sensors, the kind held in with 2 bolts that arent the housing type. Ford also recently charging cores on EGR coolers for the 6.0L to keep people from selling them to bulletproof.

Isn't that a FEDERAL mandate as well, to PROVE and document to them (EPA) that said catcon was defective and needed to be replaced??

Never heard of that, but that could be the end around Ford is using requiring them to be sent back. I know we staple printed screen shots from the IDS showing codes and PIDs for the warranty end of the deal.
