My dad is still like that. He typically buys his cars or trucks brand new, but since I work for a used car dealership, I get him ones that are a year old off lease.
He's still incredibly paranoid about making sure he could find out what brand of oil the previous owner broke the engine in on. I have him hooked on Mobil 1 now since I finally convinced him to go synthetic because of the short hop trips he makes. Now the only oil at the house is M1 10W30 and 5W30 since his new Dakota recommends a 5W. He even uses it in the lawn and garden equipment! Nothing wrong with that, but gross overkill.
