Hi Folks. I'm looking for a recommendation on what to run in 98 Lexus we just picked it. It's the ls400 with the V8. 75k miles. The previous owner ran 5w30 synthetic blend every 3k miles. We drive 90% highway. We live in NM so sometimes hits 100 in the summer. We get below freezing in the winter but will deal with that in 6 mos!

The book calls or 5w30. I use Mobil 1 in my other car, and Mobil 1 0w40 in the car this replaced. But have been reading about their change of formulation with interest and have no problem spending the money for redline or royal purple (which is what the local autozone carries)

Thank in advance foe the input

Chip

Take a look at Pennzoil Platnium, or Pennzoil Ultra 5w30. $28 for the Ultra at Walmart for a 5 quart bottle. Around $20 for Platnium.

That lexus takes 6 quarts I believe.

+1

But, you can use just about anything 5W30 in those LS's even in 100 deg heat. Take you pick and sleep well at night. I don't think you can go wrong!

My 250+k miles 1994 LS400 has the same engine, it had just about anything, conventional and synthetic, xW30. The OCI was 6-7k/6mo with dino and 12-14k/12mo with syn. The car was driven to Vegas many summers, passing Death Valley with outside temp at more than 120+ degree without any problem.

A 98 model with only 75k? That baby is practically brand new. Nice score. My father has a 97 with 200k and it runs like a top.

As the others have said, you can take your pick from just about any 5w30 out there and rest easy. If you feel like spending the extra to run Redline go right ahead. It's a fantastic oil and you can't go wrong with it. For the money, the PP and PU prices at WalMart are hard to beat. It's up to you.

Let us know what you decide to go with.

I'm pretty happy with the car. Previous owner had a stack of records including major stuff like timing and sept belts. Looks new from 10 ft away. I'll detail it next week and see if we can't make that 3 feet!

OK, I'm a newbie here. What's PP and PU?

Ran Mobil 1 0w40 in my last 3 cars. One was a turbo and had great results. Any problem running 0w40 when the book calls for 5w30?

Thanks again for all the input

I run Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in my LS400. It's a good oil.
I saw you on ClubLexus too

And, once again, congratulations on the purchase of an exceptional vehicle.

Thx Sludger. We're pretty happy with the purchase. It's a different kind of ride for me. More sedate. Really enjoying though. Acting my age I guess
