Ok so i went with a friend of mine to pick up his
1990 T-bird Supercoupe

it has the 3.8 liter V6 thats supercharged.

it has 170,000 miles and looks to burn a little oil, a little smoke on startup and if you let it idle for awhile

I suggest a high mileage oil like Castrol or Maxlife because it also has some leakage.

would you recommend a high mileage oil? and what weight?

I'd go HM ..at the recommended visc and then determine the consumption rate. If it was unfavorable ..I might attempt to control it by going up in visc. I wouldn't alter the weight without a good reason.

Ditto. Those cars NEVER get babied, I don't care who owns them. Much in the same way a Corvette, Mustang, Camaro, etc etc is driven hard, those were too. Heck I want one myself

. After the A-Rx treatment(s) I'd probably go Maxlife Syn in the correct grade.

If they used the "Essex" 3.8L from the Ford Taurus of that era, use "Oil Extreme" motor oils, which have arrested antifreeze contamination in past UOA. Also, get UOA every oil change to detect antifreeze; not Schaeffers UOA either, they don't get some of the right chemicals in their tests.
