My friend is currently breaking in his rebuilt Audi engine. He is looking to use an AMSOIL product after break-in.

In the past he has mixed the Amsoil Heavy Duty Diesel 15w-40 with 10w-40 and 5w-40 when he needed to top off, and it appeared to work very well.

He's considering AMSOIL Synthetic SAE 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil or the Series 3000 5w-30. He's wondering if mixing it 1:1 with the 15W-40 might be a good idea. He is in Southern California, by the way.

He's also considering AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil.

I recommended of course M1 5W-40, because I know it works well in this engine, but I get the feeling he wants to use AMSOIL. In that case I'd suggest of course the AMSOIL 5W-40 to him. What's up with AMSOIL 5W-40 thickening, by the way? Is that of any concern?

All opinions and feedback are appreciated. One thing I ask, though. Please don't ask me about his oil-mixing habits!

I would say for sure use the Amsoil 5W-40. I'm not sure why the worry about thickening? It didn't thicken at all in 7500 very abusive miles in nearly 12 months in my recent UOA.

The 15W-40 will work interestingly enough in an off beat sort of application.

I assume he has a dealer already or would you be sending him to a compassionate, witty, knowledgeable Bitog sponsor? (IF we only had such a person)

Oh yeah, the worries about thickening... Didn't I see the 5W-40 thicken a little in a few UOAs?

Anyway, it a n/a engine, so it's probably fairly easy on the oil. Sump is 5.2-5.5 qts, depending on filter size. I think he's got an AMSOIL dealer contact, because he is running an AMSOIL bypass filter in this car. Another thing, the pistons have been modfied to accept TotalSeal gapless rings.

Pablo, the guy is intent on using AMSOIL. He's been servicing four cars with AMSOIL for some time, so he's obviously hooked-up.

As for his engine, it started drinking oil due to "collapsed oil rings" (explanation in some other post). Compression was still fine, as is commonly the case with the 12v even if the mileage is over 200k. I think oil consumption was his major pet peeve, and that's why he went with the TotalSeal ring setup. The rebuilding took almost a year, because everyone was working on it in between.
