Hi,

A few weeks back my car was in very direct afternoon sun, and it was hot enough to make things untouchable.

I noticed that my mirror glass was shaking, and so I tried to re-attach without luck. It eventually fell off in one piece.

It looks like the backing material may have been attached to the mirror body with spray adhesive, not sure though.

How should I re-attach? 3M hi-temp spray adhesive or 3M HD dual sided trim adhesive tape, or something else?

Should I apply a razor to the yellow backing material or will that damage the reflective coating?

Please advise best methods to proceed. Thanks!

Get that old double stick off of there and either get more double stick or liberally dab slicone glue and slap it in place with some tape to line it up and let it set up overnight.

what glue is silicone glue? I know of silicone caulk, like the GE stuff you get from HD.

My dad used "construction adhesive" in those caulk tubes/guns to reglue the mirror in his truck. When the earth burns and the sun dies, that mirror will still be attached.

I've used two-part epoxy with success a couple of times. I held it in place with a stick jammed against the seat until it set.

I work construction, PL Premium, it comes in small tube or large, fits on caulking gun, the small tube for small caulking gun will be around $3.50, after using it besure to put something in end of tube to keep it from drying.

This stuff is the ULTIMATE adheasive, it will mend broken stone headstones, bond styrofoam without burning, it will almost atach anything to anything, easy to use, and huge feature is Freeze/thaw stable, allow it to cure over night and it is done, you can speed curing with a mist of water before applying the two pieces together. I will not go anywhere to jobsite or go without this product in my home, it will get you out of binds in repairs effectively everytime. Permanent fix.

There are all sorts of glues that will work great.
But you are smart to not touch the insulator/padding.

Common silicone RTV is about $5 and will work great. But you have to tape the part in place, and let it set a good long while.
3M or or anybody's weatherstrip adhesive will work well, but you have to line it up as you assemble it. You can't shift it around to align it later.
Really, all sorts of glues /adhesives will work for this.

I have used the 3M adhesive.
It did work well enough that the mirror glass never tried to come off again.
This was on my old MGB.

Rather- silicone gasket sealer, even bathtub caulk would be suitible. As suggested construction adhesive would do the job well.

Silicone 'glue', or RTV [Room Temperature Vulcanizing] is a common and very useful sealer/glue for automotive and household use.
It is used by factories in almost every car engine, here and there.
It sets up flexible, yet with an excellent seal and very good bonding. A clean substrate and good cure time are the keys.
