Nice earlier topic with people posting 7->12,000 mile oil changes with GC.
And my question is;
do you keep the same oil filter on for the interval?
How long should oil filters run for before changing?
And how do you just change the oil filter?
Do you drain the oil into a clean can, then remove the oil filter? Or can you just remove the oil filter and top up with fresh oil.
As always many thanks.

My opinion...

Most (all?) quality oil filters should be able to go 7,000 - 12,000 miles without issue. If you're really paranoid about it, change it halfway through the OCI.

As far as changing just the filter, you should be able to remove the filter and replace with a new filter without losing much oil, but it would be helpful to know exactly what car we're talking about here.

Do you mean 2.0L DOHC Zetec?
Those are exceptionally low wearing and non-sludging motors.
Motorcraft produces high-quality oil filters for that engine.
Motorcraft FL2005 is a great filter.
It's only around $4-5 at Walmart.
I used to run those filters in my Focus for about 3 years at 10-12K intervals without any problems.

I've stil got the same filter on my wife's Civic, with over 11,000 miles on it (and GC) right now. I see no need to change the filter partway through, even though it's been just over a year now too.

Hey vad,
My focus has the 2.0L SPI engine.
Now, I'm not worried about the oil yet, but I was just wondering from all those guys that posted in the other topic with long 10,000+ oil changes, if they left thier oil filter on that long? Or did they change it half way? And if they changed out the oil filter, did they have to drain out the oil? Or can they just take off the oil filter then top up with fresh oil.

Hey Patman,
I missed your post as I'm a slow typer. Cool that's three of you that have kept the oil filter on for the duration of the oil.
Very nice to know.
Thanks guys.

I haven't heard anything particularly bad about that motor as related to oil.
And you can use another good filter by Motorcraft - FL400S.

I'm pretty much sure the most of them left the filter alone.
Really, the oil filter should be the least of your concerns.

only when necessary will you change the filter

heck I have been known to not change it before
but thats another story

yes, a good quality filter should get you to the 10-12K even 15-16K level

Although perhaps after 10K or 15K depending on the quality of oil used then
it should be changed
