I am also upset that my new vehicle has a black made in Japan oil filter that is not readily available in the US and l will have to settle for the blue OEM filters.


Use the viscosity the manufacturer recommends. I am going to assume your new car is a 2015 Impreza with the 2.0L engine. If yes then it looks like 0W-20 is the recommended viscosity.

As far as how long between oil changes, if the manufacturer recommends 6K oil changes, then do it.

For 6K oil changes I would go with Mobil 1 and a decent filter (Fram Ultra, Mobil 1, or the OEM filter).

I don't believe New Jersey is any more "severe" than any other state for oil, sounds like the dealer wants more money.

Thanks for the feedback! My plan is to adhere to the 6k OCI recommendation and to check the oil level at reasonable intervals.

Now that Costco carries 6 packs of Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 in the warehouse and frequently puts it on sale for 26 dollars and change, I will use that oil with the Subaru OEM oil filter. I love the location of the oil filter on this car! With a Fumoto valve and the easily accessible oil filter, I will be able to change the oil quickly.

The dealership gave me a coupon for a "free" oil change. I'll question them to verify they will be filling it with 0w20 and not some cheap non-synthetic bulk 5w30 oil before using the coupon.
