Hi there -- Menards generally has good prices on stuff. I've never bought oil filters from them because it seemed they just had the el cheapo Frams.

Recently I saw that they are stocking a bunch of Bosch and Quaker State filters.

Question is, are these any good?

Quaker State for less than 3 bucks:

Bosch "Premium" for 4.99:

I think I've read that Bosch Premium is the same as Purolator PureOne is that correct? If so, would it have the same "tearing problem" that I've read about?

Are either of these decent choices for a Honda or should I be focused on something else that has better value?

I've typically bought PureOnes at AAP using coupons and get them for $4.65 or something. But I bought a bunch before I heard about the "tearing issue" and am now just using the last one.....so I need to decide what to buy now.......

The Quaker State filter is similar to the Purolator Classic. However, every Quaker State filter that I've cut open has more filter material used in it, therefore avoiding the tearing issue.

They routinely put the Quaker State filters on sale for $1.99, creating a solid bargain for a filter.

Thanks - so both QS and Bosch are Purolator products then I guess

Is it worth paying a few bucks more for the Bosch then? Or I guess if so, it is still better to get a PureOne since it has the grippy surface while the Bosch has a black shiny surface.

How about waiting for Napa Gold on sale? Seems there are Wix lovers on this board too. How often does Napa Gold go on sale and typically when?

Thanks

I think the Napa golds go on sale every couple of months. I would highly recommend the Napa golds or regular Wix over any Purolator made filter including Bosch, QS, or other clones which are possibly subjected to media failures.

The microguard from O'Reillys are good too. CARQUEST filters are good also.

I should also add that I typically run these filters around 6000-6500 miles based on the Honda MM

Quaker State I assume has a cheaper ADBV vs the Bosch....does anyone know the details

Are MicroGuard and CARQUEST both WIX brands?

Is Napa Gold worth buying over Napa Silver I assume?

I just wanna get something good....best value....and then stick with it and not worry about tearing

I love the QS for my CVPI. The motorcraft spec'd filter (FL-910) caused start up rattle. Instantly cured with my $1.90 QS from Menards.

Napa Gold and Wix are 95% efficient at 20 microns

In reference to the Napa filters the gold is better but the silver is good enough and still better than Purolator stuff.

What about the Carquest "White" commercial filters? Do you know the specs on these? Construction seems very solid

The Quaker State is a good deal at a buck ninety nine.
It isn't an Ultra nor even a Wix, but it gives you what you need cheaply for shortish intervals.
The Quaker State oil filters don't seem to exhibit the media tearing seen in some Purolator branded filters.

Here is a Quaker State filter with the classic tears they've all been exhibiting. You would probably see even more if they were more popular.

Quaker State3387 ran for only 3k miles torn

Yeah I'm kinda with you on that

I'm happy to get a cheap filter but if it's a choice of spending $2 or $5 and $5 gets me a better filter, then $5 it is.....I change oil about every 9 to 12 months only, so the extra $3 doesn't matter to me.

I want BEST VALUE FILTER which means best quality overall at reasonable price. If that is a $5 filter then great. If a $12 filter is basically the same thing but carries the name "Ultra Awesome" or "AmSoil" or whatever then that is no longer good value for me. But if a $5 filter is notably better than the $2 filter with better media, better ADBV, better gasket, then I will buy that. It's only when the features stop increasing yet the price keeps increasing that I jump off the train

The pleats in a Quaker State filter look completely different than a Puro Classic. I've run them up to 6k, with no apparent issues. I've yet to see a pic of a torn Quaker State filter!

Edit: I see a pic above, with a torn Quaker State filter. I personally have cut several open, with no issues.

The Napa golds represent a good price for what you get especially on sale. If I was just buying an everyday priced filter I'd get a Fram Tough Guard. I also like to get Fram Ultras and run them for 15,000 miles between changes even though I may change my oil every 5k I just leave the filter on.

Fram Tough Guards are 99% efficient at 20 microns and Fram Ultras exceed 99% @20 microns.

Agreed one hundred percent Captain

The Fram Ultra is well worth the extra cost in my opinion. Durability, performance, and cost benefit analysis would indicate that the Ultra is worthy of the extra money upon purchase. At $3.77 before tax for the extra guard it equals over $12 after tax for 15k miles. At $8.97 plus tax for the Ultra it is a better buy for the same mileage.
A good quality filter is well worth the cost than a torn one that could possibly lead to a total engine failure. Never know where the torn pieces could find their way to.

The Bosch has silcone ADBV so that would be a plus.. Also the Bosch is suppose to use FILTECH Filtration, ** IF that actually means anything **

I would get the Bosch

see what it says about FILTECH
and many HONDA owners know about FILTECH
On My HONDA it actually says FILTECH on black plastic box that hold the AIR FILTER..

Bosch Premium FILTECH Oil Filter

Exclusive FILTECH media technology screens out more harmful contaminants for greater engine protection
Strong steel base plates and housings prevent warpage, leaks and poor fit
Silicone anti-drain back valve ensures a supply of clean oil when the car is started
High lubricity gasket design provides a tight seal, yet easy removal
Double-locked rolled seam forms a leak free canister
