This was taken off a 2003 GMC Safari van with the 4.3L V6, 110k odometer miles. It belongs to my neighbors and is not well cared for, mostly city driving and short trips but seems to run OK. The oil drain was very small and very overdue... the sediment at the bottom of the can is a reflection of this. This filter has no bypass valve and no bypass is spec'd for the application. Enjoy.

Looks like 🤮🤮🤮

What went back in and on?
Yeah it's bad but could be worse I guess lol. Added Napa 5w30 syn blend oil and a Napa 1036 (Wix 51036) filter. This is an oversize filter, the spec filter is the 1040 which is significantly shorter in length. The frame crossmember guards the filter mount really well, so there's no risk running the longer oil filter on this van.

Looks good for what it went through. Caught a lot of mud. No wide pleat makes a difference, unless there is a wide pleat not seen. The block has a bypass which saved the engine from a loss of oil flow, probably.

I'm amazed there aren't any tears in the filtration , definitely could of been worse.

4.3 Vortec (5.7/5.0 V8s also) motors have the oil pressure regulated in the block that's why there isn't one on the filter.

Looks like a filter from a poorly maintained engine. If the OF only has the wavy pleats as shown, all things considered, not bad at all for a jobber filter.

Yes, earlier GM with block bypass.

Thanks for c&p.

It did it's job, and didn't tear, which puts it ahead of a lot of Puro made filters! Any idea how long it was on there? Looks like a good candidate for several short, hot PYB 5W30 runs...

No , the pressure regulating valve is for the oil pressure . The bypass valve for the filter may be in the oil filter or in the oil filter adaptor. The oil filter bypass valve opens when the differential pressure [ the pressure drop difference from the dirty side of the filter element to the clean side] which should prevent catastrophic loss of oil to the oil galleries.

Thanks for all the replies. This van does not belong to me and I'm certainly not going to do anything special because the owners just don't care very much. I would like to keep up on the basic maintenance stuff and give this engine and vehicle an easier life going forward, but it depends on my neighbors' budget... they certainly aren't rich.
This filter was in use for well over a year, mostly city stop & go, short trips. Not sure what oil Pep Boys put in at the previous service.
