Since I'm crazy, not too educated and easily intrigued and I had a new oil filter thats 10 years old and I paid 25 cents for it I'm cutting and posting it. It fits a Ford with 2.0 "zetec" engine. Did best i could with what I gots

Looks like it has an "anti-siphon" check valve near the base plate end (ie, valve with the 3 prongs on it at 120 deg apart - photo #2). Thanks for the C&P Stude.
 
They don't build cheap filters like that anymore. Look at all the parts thickness and metallics in there.... even the media is really thick.
It's like someone pulled out the first item from a 1980s Time Capsule Adam.

Can you tell me why they put a piece of cork under bypass spring in pic I posted? Thank You

Yeah, pretty decent construction sir. Real center tube with nice holes instead of "louvers"

That looks like the ones I cut apart in the 80s and 90s. None of them had tears after ~18k, although some had iffy ADBVs by then.

Can you confirm the media clearly differs from that in recent basic Purolators? Thanx!

I think it's a piece of material similar to phenolic. Used as the sealing valve between the spring and hole/seat.

Where did the small round piece or rubber come from?

Pleats don't tear on new filters ... they tear from the force put on them during use.

I cant confirm that, looks to be basic paper media to me
 
Other than the application uniqueness of added anti-siphon valve (for Zetec engine) looks pretty much like a Puro Classic from 2010. As noted, material used to seal bypass a phenolic/ (resin) type material. Not cork. Zee coined that term for the material many years ago (same year topic filter made). Later having dissected several of that type Puro bypass personally, seems a good term. Looks like typical Puro cellulous media type to me. Cut open many AAP Total Grip filters back in the day, looks the same to me.

The rubber disc a mystery to me but if I was to 'speculate', because this application has the added anti-valve I'd speculate that's where it came from. Dissection allowed/caused displacement. Filter is 10 years old. Other than that, looks pretty good to me. Fairly typical of Puro OFs I used when topic filter made.

I'm wondering if that cork disc is for preventing metal to metal contact? Avoiding particles? Interesting choice of material.

The "cork" (actually more like a hard phenolic material) disc is the bypass valve. The spring holds the disc up against the bypass hole in the end cap. When the delta-p overcomes the spring pressure, the disc moves down and oil bypasses the filter media. Purolator could have used a metal disc, but they probably thought that the phenolic made for a better seal.
 
That phenolic valve part was old news when the subject filter was made. Same as in the 1980s. Similar material to that used for rubbing blocks of ignition points back in the day, among many other uses.
