Here is a filter I took off a friend's Jeep. He also has a 2000 Cherokee 4.0L, but his only has 132k miles. This filter was run with PYB 10w30 for 5,000 miles.

His driving style is similar to mine, with mostly short trips and the occasional highway run.

The ADBV was definitely not as flexible as the silicone one I had in the FL-400s filter on my Jeep, but it was still in good shape and worked well. There were no start up noise issues throughout the OCI.

For a little over $3, I think this filter is worth it. In the case of the 4.0L Jeep, the Motorcraft FL-400s can be had for only a bit more money, but these Purolator Classics are definitely a good bang for the buck.

Looks good ... and the oil looks pretty clean for 5K miles. His engine must be in tip-top shape inside.

Good filter on the cheap; especially for 5k oci on a well cared for engine. I use the classic on my Camry and 7k OCI and also on my Brute. They do well for the cost.

I used this same filter in my Dodge. After cutting one open, I found a half inch tear in one of those "wide" spaced pleats.I have since stopped using these products and switched to Wix.Puroator states there is no difference but I noticed a decrease in quality(fewer pleats and no metal pleat crimp) when the model changed from Premium Plus to Classic.

For $3.27 for 5k, tough to beat. Looks like it did it's job. And apparently not all 4.0L Jeeps have an issue with start up noise using a filter with nitrile adbv.

Looks great, very good affordable filters no doubt and a top pick. Unfortunately those are on my loooonnnngggg list of filters that give me start up noise on my Jeep, but my Jeep is NOT typical. I ran whatever I wanted on my other two Jeeps and my buddy with the XJ can run anything he wants as well.

Good job, as always thanks for cutting and posting!

Nope not at all, my Jeep is not typical and I really think my issues are related to PO neglect regarding OCI's.

I think that is a big part of it. Mine was neglected by the previous owner, and some filters give me start up noise, particularly PureOne filters. The Classic does not for some reason, which you would think it would because of the nitrile ADBV.

My buddy's Jeep which is what this filter was on is in great shape. This is the jeep I posted the valve cover picture for when we swapped the cylinder head. It had PYB its whole life and was changed frequently. He can run pretty much any filter without any start up noise.

Judging by the cleanliness of his engine, I believe this start up noise problem is related to the hydraulic lifters in the 4.0L. His engine is also extremely quiet while running, and you cannot hear any valvetrain noise inside while driving it. My engine and another friend with a 4.0 TJ were neglected, both look dirty inside, and both have lifter noise and start up noise on certain filters.

My thoughts exactly, I really believe I fight lifter bleed down with mine. Interesting though that a handful of filters will overcome it. Has made for interesting testing.

My previous XJ had always been well maintained and I could run any filter I wanted on it. It looked much like your buddy's through the fill hole but I never had the top off.

Thanks for posting. I've got two '96 Cherokees with the 4.0 engine and lately I've been using Purolator Classics on both of them. Both Jeeps were previously neglected, but seem to have a lot of life in them. I think this filter is one of the best bangs for the buck.

1996 was a great year for the Cherokee in my opinion. They have the older classic body styling with the advantage of OBDII. So you have the classic look with the ability to pull trouble codes. If taken care of they will last a long time.
