Mostly run the engine on used oil.
This means OUO oil, oil of unknown origin.
Including old ATF.
Pleats are a little spread but totally intact.
The relief valve worked fin in the cartridge at the base.
Took quite a bit of pressure to open it.
The ADValve is soft red silicone.
Think this one was from the Saturn SL2.

Where do you get OUO from? AAP's recycling oil drum?

Try one of those filters with screen reinforced media. Fram XG and RP filters come to mind.

From two boat engines and mine and others cars, including some people who put oil out on the street for pickup. Why do they do that? I recently picked up 5 gallons from a house near the marina for use in the saturn.

I would not be using unknown used oil in my engines. That's a big risk. Thats one of the most nasty used P1 I've seen. Just think, that oil has been run in some other machine for only who knows how long and then put in your engine and run. You wouldnt catch me doing this when you can get oil for less than $1/qt. You should try nextgen if you like recycling oil lol.

Between this and the fact that you went 40k on a single filter in your other car, my head is spinning today.

How many miles have you been putting on the Saturn like this?

OUO? Say what?

8k on the filter, and who knows how many K on the oil and ATF. All things considered, that P1 did great. However, if the filter looks like that, imagine what the engine must look like.

Many folks here won't run a filter two OCI's. Using OUO, no.

This is a first, I'm stunned.

If you did not have pics that look like they do, i'd have thought you were pulling our legs. Unless you are just seeing how long it takes to destroy your engines, I don't understand the purpose of what you are doing. Are you expecting positive support here?

I'm going to grab a lawn chair and some popcorn. I can see this thread getting rather interesting later on

But yes, that filter seems to have help up well, all things considered. If you knew what else some people dump into old oil containers, I don't think you'd want to run it in your engine. ATF, gear oils, old engine oil yes, sometimes brake fluid...all the dirt and grit...

I'm guessing the Saturn SL2 burns a lot of oil, but used oil of unknown quality is not going to help that situation... it will in fact make it worse. That Pureone looks like some of the 30+K mile filters that have been posted here a few times.

Also, who knows what other fluids or chemicals have been dumped in that used oil... brake fluid, brake parts cleaner for cleaning the oil drain pan, etc.

The only used oil I would trust (even in an oil burner) would be something from one of MY cars if I felt it had some life in it... and even then I would only use it to top off and I'm not sure if I would even do that.

Quality cheap oil can almost always be found... Supertech at Wal-Mart, and O'Reilly tends to have really good sales.

At least the pleats were unripped.
The Saturn now has 195,000 miles and it burns about a qt per 500 miles.
I put so much oil in I just dont think it stays in long enough to do any harm with used oil. Engine runs as it always has run, just burns more. when we got this about 90,000 miles ago, it was burning about a qt per 1000 miles.

The poor quailty of used oil probably isn't helping the oil consumption issue.

The oil burning is caused by stuck rings due to a poorly design piston that lacks oil return holes. Used oil (especially if it is of poor condition) could make that problem even worse by causing more crud buildup in that area.

I definitely understand the desire to save on oil considering the situation, but random used oil with unknown history would scare the heck out of me.

I got about 6 gallons of free NEW oil using several rebates.
But, have no plans to put it in this Saturn oil burning machine. Simply cause it would be a waste of good oil.
I still have a lot of used oil I can dump into it, and really the engine has not suffered. It gets driven everyday about 20 miles and occasional 500 mile round trips. People who took very good care changing filters and oil ended up with the same result as me on this car. The rings loose tension, sludge up due to the design. The valve seals rot out and crack due to age. The engine defects are not related to using used oil.

I don't think he is - did you SEE the filter???

I can't blame the OP for doing what he is doing - at this stage, you just have to keep ANY oil in the engine to keep it going. As long as you change the filter regularly, the worst of the junk gets filtered out when the engine is started.

Poor Filter. It's having a tough time filtering sludge. Never seen a filter look like that in my life. PureOne is an awesome filter. But if you aren't going to change your oil with clean stuff, I suppose any filter wouldn't look good. To bad the poster didn't live by me, I could give you good synthetic with 3,000 to 4,000 miles on it. But what the heck. he is conserving used oil and in no way is he wasting it..LOL!
