PUP's fall from grace over the last 10 years?

I remember reading, on this forum in fact, around 2012 or so that PUP was the darling of reasonably priced (what was it back then? $25 or less at Walmart for a 5qt jug?) non-boutique oils. I used it religiously in my (first) TSX since it was so highly regarded here and on other car forums. After getting back into the BITOG life in the last year or so, I've read that PUP changed for the worse apparently or at least was no longer head and shoulders above its peers. Is this a case of PUP reformulating and lowering the bar or possibly the competition catching up and surpassing them? I know VRP is getting a lions share of the discussion and I use it myself in my personal car, but I'm curious what happened to PUP over the years.

Pennzoil got a lot of hype when they moved to GTL. They plastered carbon neutral and base oils from natural gas all over their bottles etc.

There was also a formulation they have about 10 years ago or so that demonstrated piston cleanliness through the sequence IIIF test. It did quite well.

PUP is a very good oil. On par with the other top tier major brands although I don't put them on the same level as Mobil 1.

Curious why you wouldn't put them on the same level as M1?

i don’t think anything is wrong with PUP and still recommend it. i think the large issue is availability and pricing. its not OTS at wally world anymore and parts houses want a fortune for a 5qt jug.

I walked through the automotive section of my local Walmart a month or so ago and didn't see it either but it seems like it is readily available on their website with free shipping.

I'm on my 5th OC of PUP with my 2016 CRV with the K24W gasoline 4 banger. I am temped to run 4 OC of VRP but that engine idles like a fine swish watch, and screams like an abused ape when I asked it to in Sport mode climbing up winding steep hills passing slow drivers like they were driving something running on a few missing cylinders. And my engine is totally stock but well maintained. Cleaned the intake sensors once already and it only has 42,980 miles on it. Coolant replaced with Honda pre-mixed, new pcv and it's on its 3rd OEM air filter. And I've changed the CVT fluid several times using Honda fluid, and rear end fluid twice.

I recently saw a YT video where someone showed testing an engine for blow-by by setting the unscrewed oil fill cap on the fill hole while the engine idled to compare an engine that used VRP to an engine that used PUP, no difference. So I did that with mine and it did not raise up. Vibrated a bit, but no raising up. An other YT video of an engine with a lot of blow-by showed an oil fill cap bouncing up a lot with the engine idleing. And looking down in the fill hole of mine, past the fill screen, with a bright light, I see Uber clean valve adjustment and surrounding area.

I put the maintance dose of 4.45 mL of Red-Line SI-1 per gallon measured with a 100 mL graduated translucent white plastic cylinder I bought from McMaster-Carr online, in the fuel tank before each fill up, and also have ran a few tanks of high dose ( 3/4 bottle to 15 gallon tank ) of SI-1 over the years, timed to run out that tank of fuel just before an OC. So that engine probably has very clean injectors, and SI-1 in fuel + PUP in the sump, probably means very clean piston rings. I think I'm staying with PUP.

BTW, one reason PUP got bashed is because the VOA now shows lower TBN. But with its great base stock, wise blending of additives, and today's low suffer gasoline, the UOA's have ALWAYS still shown acceptable TBN. So if it ain't broke don't fix it Tony. It's lower TBN is totally adequate, and probably allows the formulators to put in more good stuff of other additives to do other things well.

Bottom line, PUP is still a FANTASTIC oil. Probably even improved now with reduced TBN allowing better other additives acording to Lake Speed Jr..

Pennzoil does need to do better advertising of showing more engine teardowns of engines that used PUP for many miles, and also highlight how clean the piston rings are.

Thanks for the feedback!

For me it was two things that made me stop buying SOPUS motor oils (neither one related to the quality of the oil itself)...
1. No seal under the cap on 5qt containers. Several years back I purchased a bottle from Walmart that was filled with water. I didn't know about it until I was half way through my oil change.
2. They stiffed me on a rebate.

I used it for a year or so when I bought my 07 SantaFe new. Switched over to Quaker State syn. motor lasted over 200K.

Unless you have a demanding engine it probably doesn't make much difference.

Two on tap. :D
