Due to Walmart rollbacks, you can go buy two Pennzoil 5 quart bottles for $23.92 each at a Walmart store. So that's $51 if you get charged tax.

$25 off with the Pennzoil rebate makes this $26 for two.

Two Purolator Boss filters at Walmart? $15 to $20 a pop. The price is insane even with the rebate. Don't go there!

But if you go to Amazon, the Boss filter is around $10. With the Purolator rebate that just began, the cost is only around $5 to $6 per filter. Plus you can buy three of them if you like. That's 30,000 miles of excellent filtration for around $15 to $18.

All in all this will cost you less than $20 for a top quality synthetic oil change. That's cheaper and way less burdensome than dealing with Advance Auto Parts or anything else this 4th of July weekend.

PUP has been a great oil thru the years but feels like it has been cast aside by SOPUS. I went as far as 17.1k on PUP 5w20 in an ‘11 Fusion where the oil had just thickened out of grade, but everything else looked great, iron wear <2ppm/1k miles.

Cool score. If I was still buying shelf stock I’d buy all I could get in the cart. Since Ravenol DXG couldn’t even survive 6k in grade in my EcoBoost, I went to HPL. Sure, it’s more than $13/oci, but considering most EB owners are doing $35-40 OCIs every 5k and I’m doing one $70 OCI every 15k+, I consider myself far ahead in the long run.

TL;DR: SOPUS whizzed away PUP’s market panache over time, but it still looks like a top-tier oil in the $13-27 range. Just not at the $35+ that it had been on WM.com for awhile…

Very good write-up. 👍
Didn't know Purolator had a rebate going on but I will note @Slick3914 concern. I don't normally see Ultra on the shelves anymore. 😕. Maybe I need to run down and have another look.

Happy 4th to you as well. 🥳 🎆🎇

I take the similar approach. You can also leverage rockauto whenever you order parts to reduce shipping costs. Wix or wix xp were by go to filters for years as a reasonable price.

the title is misleading PUP = $29.44 online and it's a little more or about the same in-store, I saw it in-store in Irvine, CA Walmart when I was traveling through.

Now PP is on rollback for $23.78

PP doesn't equal PUP, the title needs to be changed.

Have 3 Walmart's near me (including one by my work.) NONE of them have Ultra Platinum.
So, jumped on the subscribe and save on amazon for a three pack (not eligible for rebate though) About $22 each. Score......wait, no....delivery delayed...indefinitely. So, canceled.

Went to Walmart and purchased (2) 5-quart jugs of Pennzoil Platinum and submitted the paperwork for the $25 rebate. Not PUP, but for a 5K OCI, should be just fine. With the Premium Guard filter score ($.73 each) that is 2 oil change intervals of a full synthetic, Pennzoil platinum for around $11 or so each.....good enough.

The Fram Extra Guard PH7317 or whichever PHxxxx fits your vehicle can be purchased from Amazon subscribe and save for $3.50 a filter.
It has 95% efficiency for particles > 20 microns, and a 10,000 mile suggested filter change interval.
So it might be the best "value" in filters (Much higher efficiency than an OEM oil filter).

I've had good results with SuperTech Full Synthetic High Mileage Dexos 1 Gen 3 5W-30 @18.64 for the 5 quart jug - $1 5% discount if using Walmart credit card = about 17.64 + tax. My belief is a new engine using this oil will have the same outcome as an identical engine using Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic oil over a 300,000 mile life. I bought some exacto knife's from Amazon so I can cut along the circumference of the SuperTech's spout protection to remove the paper/plastic 2 layer film. Even though this is a small nuisance, I can be sure no one has "returned" the oil to Walmart and put their old oil in there. Several other oil brands have no spout protection at all.

The rebate site clearly indicates PUP or PP works for the rebate so it doesn't matter.

Buy the PP or PUP on rollback and enjoy.
