Progressive car insurance, found a way to lower rates

I've been with Progressive for 11 years and like everyone else they went up on their rates, but way up. I used to pay (in Michigan) less than $600 per 6 months when paid in full. Last renewal notice was $820! So I searched quote on their website, requoted the vehicle, removed the stuff I didn't need, and with some very minor changes I started a new policy and paid $527 for a 6 month renewal.

I was reading apparently car insurance companies use an algorithm to determine how likely you are to switch and if you are not likely then they increase the rates more on you compared to other people.

I think they all do this.

Did they raise it a reasonable amount the time before and you paid it? I think there algorithm just keeps upping it. 3% this time, 5% next time, 11% the time after.

I'm with progressive as well and recently switched from Geico who really jacked the rates up on me three times over the past year. So I shopped around and based on what I wanted progressive offered me the best deal.

I have had a few people in the insurance business advise me to shop different providers every 2 to 4 years and switch back and forth as needed.

I agree with everyone above! Michigan has an abundance of uninsured drivers in our "no fault" state.. Based on personal (bad) experience, we ALWAYS have uninsured motorist coverage on our policy.

I was with Progressive for a few years in southern IL before moving back to TX in '23. Something happened with their algorithm application at that point...and it was just so stupid I had to move along. First, when I called to report my new address and state of residence, they sent me a list of all the people in my residence (from public records). So besides me, my wife, and my daughter, my house was still apparently home to the three teenagers who previously lived here. I called to tell them those teens were members of the "Smith" family, from which we purchased the home. The moron on the phone stated "Well, uh...the record still shows they reside there, so they must be included on your policy." I told them they used to live here, but obviously moved with their own family. No dice. I hung up and called back to see if I could talk to someone with more sense. After about another half-hour of waiting, I finally got a person who requested I sign a statement affirming the "Smith" children aren't mine and don't live in my house. I did that and they were removed.

Within minutes, they re-adjusted the rate and sent me new coverage info. I noticed they included my 21-year-old daughter on the policy as a covered driver. My daughter has been handicapped from birth, blind in one eye, and was never a licensed driver (and never will be). The agent told me "No matter...you have an adult in the house who could potentially operate your vehicles without your consent. She has to be on your policy." I told the lady this was impossible as my kid was not a licensed driver. She wouldn't budge, so I asked for someone else. Got the same tune from yet another moron. I left them hanging and visited a local Allstate agent. Same coverage was over $100.00 less every six months, so said goodbye to Progressive.

The problems I experienced were undoubtedly the result of computer algorithms being used and interpreted by people with little-to-no common sense or critical thinking skills. They were simply mindless drones reached via toll-free numbers. Sitting down with my local agent alleviated all the stupidity and even saved me a little money.

I shudder to think how some of these clowns would act in the event I actually had to file a claim. I'm sure it would be like a scene from Idiocracy...

Yep every 2-3 years I switch. This year, progressive decided to lower their rates more than GEICO so I ended up staying with them; amazing how rates magically lower when you're about to switch companies.

I have Progressive for both my car and motorcycle. I just renewed both and they both went down a lot. My 2024 motorcycle went from $489 to $389 a year. My 06 Acura TL went down to $279 (6 month), liability only. They emailed me the rate reductions, I didn’t contact them to try to lower them.

It did. It was somewhere around $600 renewal cost for this period in 2023, then a touch over $700 in 2024, which I thought about leaving then, but $820 was too much. So right on track with what you are saying.

Been with Geico for more than 20 years, I need to shop around because they are killing me. 5 vehicles with no points on anyone's license, don't carry full coverage on any of them as they are all paid for.

I've been with State Farm for...well, forever. Got a call from my agent about 2 weeks ago to warn me about the rate increase and suggesting that we sit down and see what can be done to reduce the premium.

I hate to switch because I have the history with them, and I have to admit that the various agents over the years have been extremely helpful when I've needed their help.

I can guarantee State Farm cares zero about your loyalty.

Wow I am under 600 for a new vehicle for a whole year coverage.

Those constant TV ads are probably half your policy cost.

Same with Liberty Mutual - LiMu's contract renewal was in pro baller territory I hear. Doug - not so much.

A rough number how much a Tesla is per year?
It jumped to $900 for 6 months; $515 is Collison. That's what jumped.
When I bought the 2024 Model 3 Performance and switched from the 2018 Model 3 Mid Range RWD, my insurance actually went down. I think I was paying like $450; not sure. Boy was I surprised by the jump.

What's a poor boy to do?
