Can it be assumed manufacturers, at least the premium ones, will use distilled water in premix coolant or could it be tap water?

Or de-ionized. Which is fine. Years ago my Mom had this little filter and cartridge she would use for water for the iron. That produced I believe is de-ionized water.

Yes, Griot's Garage sells these right in their catalog.

I'm still not convinced municipal tap water supplies have enough mineral content to be concerned with when changing the coolant every 2 years like you're supposed to.

Many service schedules have shorter intervals for subsequent fills compared to initial fills.

Some say it is because of not being able to guarantee the water used, or it could be that very few people will do a complete exchange.

I rely on test strips.

My fish tank indicates the tap water around here has a boatload of minerals. Filter, lights, heater, whole top of the tank is white. Thick and doesnt scrub off. The fish don't care, maybe the engine won't either

As said, either distilled or deionized. Either way a great money maker for the AF manufacturers and a rip off for consumers. Also makes complete system flushes very difficult and wasteful if using multiple drain and fill flush method.

Distilled, buck a gallon. Deionized is also good but more difficult to find at least around here.
Tap water is the last dreck i would put in my cooling system.
