PP 10W/30 - 3,000 miles - LS1 5.7 L - 2nd U.O.A.

Hey guys! Some might remember me from my last UOA with my Camaro which wasn't so hot.

There were a few factors involved (lots of idling, seafoam right before the analysis) but I think the real reason was the previous owner used dino oil for the first 30k, and it might have just beein cleaning up some things.

I have to say I'm really happy with the report for a follow up to the last UOA. Blackstone recommended to only run the oil for 2000 miles, I did 3000. A lot less idling this time around. I'd say 70% city 30% highway driving.

I'm still a newbie with UOA's so all input is much appreciated!
 
yep, nice downward trend on wear metals. Oil is in great shape and stayed in grade. Insolubles perfect, and perfect flash. Don't change anything and I suspect you'll have even lower numbers on your next UOA.
 
Yes the down ward trend is a good thing. I am just glad I do not own a V8 made by GM!!! Copper 48 at 44K miles!!! That is just insane!Iron tin and lead are far too high as well for a 3000 mile OCI! I would be alarmed as all get out if I say those numbers after 10K miles on my Toyota let alone 3000 miles. Nothing you are doing though just the poor design and materials used!It looks good in the fact that it is at least trending down Copper of 101 is just out of sight 150ppm is most considered a failure by most oil analysis places.

But dang those engines run great and take a TON of abuse

Yep - Got 168,000 miles on mine and it runs like new.

My neighbor donated his 5.3L at 325,000 unopened great running miles!
 
This engine'll spit 10ppm of copper per 1000 miles for 300,000 miles without sweating :)

And it'll do it under some hard driving conditions too.
 
Thanks for the replies! The car is never raced. I did however run this car a little harder than the last oil change -- still nothing anyone would consider abuse, or anything like that.

JohnBrowning - I know the copper is still alarming to see, but at the same time going from 101 to 48 in one oil change is really promising to me. I went through a lot of LS1 and Chevy V8 UOA's after my first set of results and it really is common in pretty much all of these engines to have higher copper than usual. The universal average is 34 so I am really not too concerned. I also strongly believe it will drop more on the next UOA.

How is that Flashpoint? I am still learning.
 
Looks like a huge improvement. I think you're going to be fine. I'd probably stick with one more short (3k-4k) OCI and then if things continue to improve I'd start trying longer OCI's if you want. I think you're right that it will improve some more on the next one. Who knows what the history is on a used car. All sorts of things can affect your UOA besides what happened during that one OCI.

You're right, I forgot about that. There was definitely a huge improvement in flash point this time around. Obviously something was dilluting the oil last time. Either fuel or the cleaning that was done.
 
Wouldn't there have been fuel in the report? Last report showed < 0.5% fuel. Could something like seafoam through the intake hose hurt the flashpoint?

Blackstone measurment of fuel leaves a little to be desired I've notice. It's easier to tell by the ending thickness of the oil along with the flash point. In you earlier case you end with 10.67 on a 12.3 cSt oil. Seafoam or anything else introduced to the oil can hurt the flash point but it should burn off in short order.

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. I think I will be sticking with this oil for a while too. I will do 6 months again, and the mileage should be about 4-5k with this car.
