Power steering flush

I want to flush out my power steering system on my 2002 Tacoma V6 since after doing a resivor change the fluid was pretty dirty (not original fluid) does anyone know the size of the return hose so i can get a barb to extend the return hose into a container. When i do this do i need to turn the wheel from wheel lock to wheel lock or can i let the punp do the work? Thanks.

You will want to disconnect the return line, jack up the front end, turn the wheels from lock to lock, and top off the reservoir after every 3-4 full lock to lock turns.

My return hose was the one highest up, which seems to be how it is on most cars. Try a 1" diameter hose, I'm not 100% sure for your vehicle, but that should be able to go around the return line and down into a container. Inspect the engine bay, you may find something that can support a milk jug and the hose could sit in there while it pumps out.

Thanks i dont have a jacking point on my truck to get both tires off the ground.

Can you lift up one side of the frame at a time and support it on jack stands?

I read thro the flush post and one question that is unclear, during the entire flush was the vehicle turned OFF? Second, many reservoirs hold 1/4 Q, and if you did 3-4 times sterring locks (left to right, then right to left) to drain reservoir, you actually did the turns 8 * 4 =~ 30 times to flush out 2 Q thro the return line, right!!!

There was another post by Kestas where the car is turned ON during the flush which is actually a pain, one needs to be the reserviour filled all the time during wheel locks (but definetly quicker)

Sorry about being unclear, but the engine is off. My reservoir holds about 1/2 quart, after I did the full lock-to-lcok turns, I would get out and inspect the reservoir and it was nearly drained, so I would add another 1/2 quart and repeat until 2 quarts went through.

I did it the old fashion method sucking out the old fluid driving around then sucking it out again. This process took me about 5 times.

Siphon/refill is easiest method and doesn't get air in the system. Now that the reservoir is clean, perform a siphon/refill a couple times a year to keep it that way!

I've got notin but Yotas. 4runner and supras. It's 3/8" hose. I don't use an extension. What I do is unplug the return hose at the resv, and hang it down under the car into a pan/container. Fill resv, start engine turn wheel until you hear noise, shut engine off & refill. Repeat a few times. Another thing to think about on Yotas is the screen in the resev. on my 90 turbo supra the screen was all gunked up, so i pulled the Resovior and back flushed it with the hose and cleaners.
