Power steering on restoration project

I posted about engine issues a shop is having that was doing a restoration for me. More issues??

He contacted me a while back and said they were having trouble figuring out the hoses on the power steering. Mentioned it again later. They were really lost and unable to figure out the 2 hoses. Even said it may have to be replaced.

Well about 3 weeks after he first mentioned having trouble figuring it out, the shop owner texted me and said they finally figured them out, but the gearbox was pouring fluid from all seals. Said it's cheaper to replace it than to rebuild.

But I was thinking about this yesterday. At that time, he had not even attempted to start my engine. So without the engine running, would he actually have known the gearbox was pouring fluid from all seals? Or more of his BS?

If you have no faith in this rebuilder, why not just pick up the engine and take it somewhere else?
I've picked up my Bronco and all. Just wondering if the gearbox was actually leaking like he said, or if he replaced it just because he could not figure it out.

If the leak is absurdly bad, it could maybe leak when you begin filling the system. Feels like a bit of a stretch, though.

I think the only place this might be plausible is the sector shaft seal which is typically the lowest point of the system.

I had a lovely reman caliper from O'Reilly start pouring fluid from a piston shortly after just connecting the brake hose (didn't even get to bleeding it). Closest example I have, but to be a clear a brake caliper and brake fluid is very different from a steering box and PSF

I'd casually ask if the system was providing any assist. Then he should have to say "oh we never started it" at which time you can ask where it was leaking if it wasn't under pressure from a pump OR if he says it DID provide some assist you can say "Oh cool so you got it running?"

Don't accept that the leak was "from the box." He probably screwed the lines and they're leaking, running down all over the box.

Dude, go get your vehicle! Pay a rollback to haul it out of there if you have to.

edit: see you got it! Good!

What state/area are you in? You obviously need referrals of non-mouth-breathers if you can't DIY this project.

I picked it up Monday. Just reviewing things he's told me that don't seem to add up. It's unfinished and now I'm left with a headache
