Curious what others see inside their tailpipes. Seems an odd thing to think about yes, but I'm baffled by how clean it stays inside my 2005 Silverado 4.8 engine with 240k miles, 10,187 hours, original engine, exhaust o2 sensors, cats etc
Comparison pics are my wife's direct injection 2013 Hyundai Sonata with 70k ish miles and my carbureted 84 olds with a 76 350 olds engine, running a little rich on cold start with the colder weather lately. Last couple pics of the Silverado tailpipe, I just started it in minus 1 C about 10-15 seconds before.

Unfortunately it's not all as clean as the tailpipe. This is my Saturday job, finally trying to fix up this 5 or 6 year old fender bender.

Inspecting the tailpipe for oily deposits (dry soot is okay, esp with GDI) is how I've avoided buying oil burners for 30+ years.
My 2006 Toyota Matrix was the cleanest of all, bare metal.

I need to find my old wheel brush and scrub the tips. I wanted Borla carbon fiber tips on my Borla exhaust but it wasn't an option.

Back in the day, leaded 100 octane gas left the tail pipes a light grey almost white color especially after a long highway run at speed.

OK I’ll play. This is on the forte 2.4L non DI.

Original exhaust, burns no oil, (a quick story) but I did use some marvel mystery oil, 1 ounce per gallon on this tank.

That is completely out of the norm for me.

I’m always follow the suggested dosages of 4 ounces per 10 gallons or about 8 ounces per tank if filling up from empty. I do “maintenance dosages“ a couple ounces per half tank.

So what I’m getting at 😆

Even with the “heavy” 16 plus oz of marvel mystery oil in the 91 e-0 fuel the exhaust is still clean - so that leads me to believe one of a couple things, this engine and fuel has very little carbon, buildup deposits, etc. and the MMO has nothing to “clean“ and I’m only benefiting from the lubrication properties of the MMO….
or two the MMO is not actually doing anything, and I’ve been wasting my money for 15 years 😂

Last observation: the 2.4L Sonatas exhaust… carbon sometimes one trip after I clean them… but it’s DI. Also I do not run mmo in sonata because of DI.

The forte is non DI and exhaust never has carbon like the sonata.

I use the same fuel in both of these vehicles – 91 ethanol free and I use the same oil 5W-30 synthetic around 5.7 quarts in each engine. Both 2.4L will see wot a couple times a month.

Probably the catalytic converter helps a lot. My engine used to eject blue smoke on startup occasionally until I installed a catch can, which had to be emptied daily until I replaced the valve cover with the plugged up pcv. Now I dump the catch can at oil change time and it's nowhere near full. Somehow none of that previous oil burning left any residue in the tailpipe.

Differences in lighting, etc., make the photographs difficult to compare.
The inside of my tailpipe stays amazingly clean, despite being connected to an engine of which many examples (not mine, so far) are notorious oil guzzlers.
