I need something to plug into the carport wall, battery back-up would be nice, can handle CDs, FM radio. Any decent brands or places I should look to. I just want to avoid Sony as, it seems, everything I've owned from them was rough around the edges.

Take a look at Sangean brand radios. You can buy them on Amazon and they have many good reviews. I'm currently looking for the same thing and I'm leaning toward getting a Sangean. I don't know if they have CD players in their outdoor radios though. I'm looking at the Sangan U3 utility radio.

Go to Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift stores and see what they have.

With Father's Day coming up there might be endcap displays of combo boom box/ tool kits and other drivel. Yard sales?

That's what you need to do.

Back when I was dating my wife, I took her trash from her apartment to the dumpster and found one of these guys sitting out beside it:

It's a CFD-222 from like 1998. Apparently the former owner couldn't bring himself to throw it in. After cleaning the lens and the tape heads and wiping the rest of it down it's served us well for at least 5 years. I know you don't want a Sony, but I couldn't argue with free.

Sounds like you want a CD boom box or mini/micro-system. Try Goodwill/Salvation Army stores, garage sales, etc for a good used one. They often go dirt cheap- and unfortunately for you, Sonys often have the best FM radios in 'em.

Its just that our Sony TV has a edge around where the picture is that shows fuzz.

My home audio receiver konked out kind of early and wasn't as good as the Kenwood I have now for half the price.

I needed a belt clip FM radio and got a Jensen that was good but died so i was looking to upgrade to a more decent unit and found a Sony for more than double the Jensen and the reception was hit or miss. Sometimes ok for some channels and pitiful for others.

Also, their car audio has never been par.

So with all these experiences I figured all their stuff wasn't up to snuff.

Need: Good reception and good volume. Everything else (CD, battery back-up, digital tuner, remote) all that is not important compared to the reception and volume.

Will look into Sangean and Goodwill but don't expect to find anything there, but could luck out.

thank you

Yeah, you're right about the car audio. Sony sucks in that department.

I was at Goodwill today, actually, and looked at the electronics with this thread in mind. You'll probably be able to find something there for less than $10.
