I used to think hybrids were stupid, too, but I grew out of that. My Mariner hybrid gets 50% better tank averages than the non-hybrid does. I have yet to average under 27mpg on a tank.
what's the long-term reliability look like? Repair costs? How do tech's get qualified to work on Hybrids? Weekend class?

Ford hybrids have proven to be pretty much perfect in reliability. The escape (mariner), and fusion hybrids in taxi service have seen pretty much zero problems of any kind.

Is it worth pointing out that an Escape or Mariner (or any SUV/CUV for that matter) is actually a station wagon?

My wife is just as goofy. She absolutely hates station wagons,my Outback included. She absolutely loved her '07 Tahoe. Favorite car she has ever owned. Not a day goes by that she doesn't mention how much she loved it.

I made the mistake of pointing out that the Tahoe was a big overgrown station wagon. We argued over that for an hour.

This pretty much covers it. Hybrids, if well taken care of, can have lower maintenance costs. Ford recommends and programs the oil change reminder for 10,000 miles. The transmission fluid practically never needs replaced (the transmission contains no clutches, it is a planetary gear set with input from the engine and two electric motor/generators) but if you change it, it is easy and you get a full fluid change due to the lack of torque converter. Rear differential and power transfer unit fluids are easy to change. All of the air filters (engine, cabin and battery) are readily available and easily changed. Ford has never had an electric motor failure, and out of the 300,000,000 individual cells that have gone into their battery packs, only 5 have failed.

The hybrid system also has an 8 year 100,000 mile warranty.
