Please explain beta ratios. I'm lost.

Before anyone asks, yes I did lots of research and searched well on this forum. I'm still thoroughly confused. All I see are either terrible explanations of single numbers ("Beta Ratio 2"), or formulas without explanation at all ("2/20=6/20"). All I know is my math teacher would have had a fit if I wrote 2/20=6/20. Can anyone help decipher WIX's information of these 2 filters. Everyone says they are interchangeable, but there are definitely some different numbers, therefore I don't think that's accurate. I do understand what both represent, and the principles of what they do, just looking to understand how to interpret the numbers.

Edit: Also, what is this Nominal Micron Rating at the bottom?

WIX uses their own non-industry beta ratio nomenclature. That's what screws up trying to understand WIX beta ratio numbers, because it doesn't follow what you're gonna find searching the internet.

2/20=6/20

The two numbers on the left of the equals sign are the Beta Ratios:

Beta 2 = 50% efficient
Beta 20 = 95% efficient

The two numbers on right of the equals sign are the corresponding particle sizes.

The 2 in "2/20" goes with the 6 in "6/20", so it means 50% efficient at 6 microns.

The 20 in "2/20" goes with the 20 in "6/20", so it means 95% efficient at 20 microns.

Think of it as:

Beta 2/Beta 20 = 6 microns/20 microns

or

50% at/95% at = 6 microns/20 microns

Thank you. We have a winner. Amazing how I couldn't find this anywhere...

Assuming there's cleaeance for both, when comparing a WIX 57035 and a WIX 51348, why would the 57035 be the preferred filter? They're worse at their job and far more expensive.

Yeah, the 51358 is definately the more efficient filter.
 
good explanation + i seen a lot of great info on machinery lubrication but yours is better! thanks Z06
 
The NAPA Gold 1515 (WIX 51515) is 99% Efficient At 23 Microns.
