We rented a few videos for a flight on our iPad and didn't get to watch them all. Now we want to watch them on our TV but we do not have an Apple TV. My question is can I airplay the iPad to my Macbook and have the Macbook connected to the TV with HDMI?

In theory I think it should work but I'm not sure if I can use airplay and the HDMI cable at the same time.

If you rented them from the iTunes Store, just connect the MacBook to the TV and play it there. You don't even need to involve the iPad at all. The rental can be played on any device you've authorized/linked to your iTunes account.

Ahh thanks, I didn't even think to have her sign into her iTunes account on my Macbook. Only downside I guess is that we'll have to re-download (or stream) the movies we already have downloaded on the iPad.

AFAIK you cannot stream stuff purchased on the iTunes Store -- it is DRM'd.

Well I got the official answer to my question. According to the Apple support site you can transfer any iTunes purchase from your Mac to an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Unfortunately, if you download the movie on one of those devices you cannot transfer it back to a Mac.

Looks like we'll be watching these on the iPad.

As far as the Chromecast idea. It's truly a good idea but we already have a smart TV and an Xbox One so I would only be buying it for this one occasion. Not really worth it.

The ChromeCast also does not mirror your mobile device. It goes to the internet and sources the material itself. I'm sure in the future it will have mirror capabilities, but for now (last I knew) it doesn't. For instance, if you go to the YouTube app and select a video, then put it to the ChromeCast, the ChromeCast goes to YouTube, and streams the video. You cannot watch a movie file from your mobile devices internal storage on the TV.

For the future, if you desire, there is a little adapter for the iPad to plug an HDMI cable into it. This is the 30 pin version but there is also a Lightning version if you have a 4th generation iPad or iPad Air.
