It sounds like they used handguns to fend the pirates off. I guess it doesn't take much to defend a ship from these guys.

Porch lights defend the homes in my neighbourhood from petty criminals. These types prefer the minimal effort of easy prey.

The fire hose was the big mojomofo in the conflict.
I would think that it was more of a deal that a cruise ship is a lot harder to board than a freighter. Usually I believe that they have AK47's and RPG's so normally handguns shouldn't be much of a problem and fire hoses have been one of the weapons for a while now and it doesn't look like it was much success.
Those poor pirates didn't stand a chance...

I was listening to NPR today, and they had a story on a freighter that coated the upper hull portion with axle grease, strung concertina wire around the ship laced with broken glass, electrified some rear grates, and then took on six mercenary guards....
