Interesting.... found this on my GM truck forum...didn't say what kind of truck it was though...

HOUSTON, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- William White of Lawrenceville, Georgia
pulled his 1995 pickup into Lube 3000 on Buford Drive today for its million-
mile oil change. He left Lube 3000 with brand a new pickup compliments of
Pennzoil.
William, who lives in Lawrenceville, has put close to 800 miles per day on
his truck, while delivering newspapers from Spartanburg, SC to Nashville, TN.
Every four workdays, William takes his truck to the same Lube 3000 to have his
oil changed, always insisting on Pennzoil(R) motor oil.
"Bill has been a loyal customer of Lube 3000 and Pennzoil(R) motor oil,"
said Dave Page, Atlanta market manager for Pennzoil. "His unwavering
dedication to oil changes with Pennzoil(R) every 3,000 miles, has kept his
1995 pickup in peak condition. We're more than happy to provide him with a
brand new pickup to do it all again."
Pennzoil is taking the million-mile pickup to its research laboratories in
Texas for a close look at the engine. Jeff Hsu, one of the company's senior
research engineers, will remove the engine from the vehicle, disassemble it
and perform a detailed inspection. Jeff is a CRC certified rater, recognized
in the industry for his ability to inspect engine parts and assign a numerical
value that describes how clean or worn they are for comparison purposes.
"We do a lot of laboratory tests on engines to simulate extensive mileage
under various conditions, but to have one that has actually been driven by a
consumer for a million miles is an excellent opportunity to study the real
thing," said Mark Ferner, manager of mechanical development at the Pennzoil-
Quaker State Company Research & Development Center. "A million miles for a
passenger vehicle with a gas engine is quite an accomplishment."
Pennzoil(R) brand motor oils are manufactured and distributed by Pennzoil-
Quaker State Company (NYSE: PZL), a leading worldwide automotive consumer
products company, with 20 leading brands in more than 90 countries. The
company markets both Pennzoil(R) and Quaker State(R) brand motor oils, the
number one and number two selling motor oils in the United States. Jiffy
Lube, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennzoil-Quaker State Company, is the
world's largest fast lube operator and franchiser. For more information about

This seems to come up all the time..always involves newspapers and seems sometimes to be a different vehicle. Forgive me but I didn't see it in any of these references.

Should we mark this one down as a demonstration that 3K OCIs are better than longer OCIs? If not then why not? Or perhaps as; 3K OCs are better if you want you vehicle to last 1,000,000 miles?

If he had been using LC or/and Auto-Rx he could have extended the OCI to 7-8000 miles. With no problems, since this wasn't much stop and go driving. He would probably have saved several hundred hours and cut the cost of oil in half, with this procedure.

800 miles a day, easy livin for any oil. My bet, any synthetic changed 75% fewer times would have gone the same with a lot less hassle.

I figured he did about 313 oil changes during his 1,000,000 miles. At 29.99 an oil change (probably a too low of an estimate), he spent at least 9,300 dollars on oil changes. He coul have easily gone 10,000 miles OCI with Mobil 1 and saved some money. Shoot, I did 10k oil change intervals in my wife's Ford Taurus with Rotella-T cuz I was too cheap to spring for Mobil 1

Nice to see someone getting good use out of a vehicle! I saw this truck a couple of years ago on the show Motoring 200X. IMHO he spent more than necessary on oil changes, though. With such easy service, I would just follow the owner's manual and do 8000 mile changes with a cheap dino oil.

Houston Business Journal article dated Sep 2001:

http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2001/09/10/tidbits.html

says the truck was a 3/4 ton Chevy 2500. The above link mentions the truck would be driven in the 2002 Art Car Parade... a quick Google search pulled up the following link:

That oil change place is in the first in territory of my last fire station. About 2 years ago we had a gas leak there and while walking around in the office portion was a picture of the truck, and several people shaking hands in front of it. If I remember correctly there was also a picture of the new truck. I can't remember what color the truck was though.

I asked the manager about the picture and he said a local man went 1,000,000 miles on the original motor using Pennzoil. They were quite proud of the it. Of course I had to throw my 2 cents in that most of the credit probably goes to GM...LOL. I'm not a GM man, but had to ruffle some feathers.

I'd say he needs a life....not a new truck!
Driving for 15 hours a day.....
333 oil changes in 10 years......6,660 bucks in oil changes to get a new truck, maybe he does have the right idea!
Using Yahoo driving directions to get the distances:
Ga - Sc 145 miles - 2 hours 51 minutes
Sc - Tn 353 miles - 6 hours 58 minutes
Tn - Ga 266 miles - 5 hours 9 minutes

1 million miles of highway driving with oil changes every 3000 miles, I would like to see the wear report from the teardown.

I wonder if he had the transmission and rear end fluid changed every 15,000 miles.

Truck looks in really good shape overall. Kinda hard to tell with all that stuff on it. But the wheels and the grill look clean, maybe an indication of its condition. When I read the story above I was expecting someone much more "weathered" looking than that. I'm impressed

If its a 95 it has the old style TBI motor.
