I have been looking for a used truck for a week or two now and think I finally settled on one. Its a 2004 Canyon with the 4 cyl. The truck is really clean, only 28,000 miles and was owned by a retired guy who quit driving. The oil change sticker on the windshield says next due at 30k December 2008!

I planned on changing the oil, transmission fluid and coolant. Any other suggestions or tips?

Whenever you buy used, do everything on it as if you didn't trust the person.

Change:
ATF/MTF
Differential Fluid
Transfer Case if its 4x4
Oil
Run Injector Cleaner in the Gas tank
Change Plugs/Wires
Coolant
P/S + Brake Fluid(turkey baster, drain+refill).

That will be a nice little truck for you. If it's a clean 28Kmi on it, I wouldn't think much will need to be done, but I do like to swap out all the lubes/fluids on used purchases just so I know what's in there. The trans, coolant and plugs should be like new, although I'd prolly remove and antiseize the plugs and throw some silicone grease in the coil boots. The 4L60E trans should last forever coupled to a 4cyl. This trans is used right up to big 4x4 V8's. The GM Atlas/Vortec 4, 5 and 6cyls are great engines.

My dad has a 2005 GMC Canyon extended cap, SLE trim with the 5cyl. He likes it and at 48k miles never any problems. Uncle has the same truck also but with the 4cyl like the one you're looking at and he loves it too.

Sure enough! you can. It probably doesn't do all that much worse than the inline 5cyl on fuel too. The 5cyl isn't horrible on gas, but for a small MPG loss, may as well have a V8.
