Hey look here .

Phillips no longer lists their 5w-20 and 5w-30 with the other oils in the typical data sheets .

I knew it was coming but so soon ?

The Group III blend TropArtic 5W-30 does have a respectable cold crank rating. I'd consider running it this winter in my Silverado 5.3L Vortec.

Wonder if it will be available OTC at Autozone or Checker?

The CCV of the first gen SL GF-3 5w-30 Trop Artic was 4650 .

That oil had a VI index of 10 lower than it has now .

Someone correct me if I'm wrong
wink.gif
but these better grouped 5w-30's seem like they can be made with less VII's and pour point depressants than their 10w-30 brothers in the same brand at this point regardless of the spread because of the use of better base oils with the superior cold temp performance that come with the clean, higher group base oil blended in instead of additive doping.

More engine oil with less additives that offer little to no added protection while at operating temps . Should be the most shear stable dino 5w-30 yet in theory . We'll see in analysis/practice

I've printed off Mobils tech data sheets for the Drive Clean to see how the data changes with API SM GF-4 formulas

Man....you are the Trop Artic pimp.

Exactly how much stock do you own in Conoco/Phillips?

Just bought a case of the 10w-30 for my next round of oil changes. Gonna see how it does in my Durango. Decided to go with it over Havoline because Havoline seems to be next to impossible to find sometimes, at least in the 10w-30. The Trop Artic looks to be a good oil from what I've read, and the price can't be beat. A local farm story here carries some oils/lubricants, mostly for tractors & etc....but they also carry Trop Artic, Mystik, Kendall, Citgo, and QS motor oils. They are all dirt cheap. The Trop artic is 99 cents, QS is the most expensive and it's $1.29

It won't let you down , it's good oil .

BTW , what farm store are you speaking of that also carries the Kendall ?

I never saw Trop Artic Phillips oil at Autozone before this week. The bottles had dust on them and they said GF-3. I guess there trying to rid themselves of their old stock. I think they were $1.43 a qt. so it may be better to wait till the bottles say BLEND on them. So in your opnion MOTORBIKE is this line of oils going to be better than Chevron Supream, Penzoil, Castrol GTX and Valvoline. That is a hard question to answer I know till the #ers come in , but as others have made assumptions by their VOA that the oil has made a blending improvement or taken away something that may make the oil loose something.

The TropArtic syn blend 5w-20 does have a nice CCV spec, but the cheaper Havoline and Chevron Supreme 5w-20 own the flashpoint spec--460 deg F.

The store is Atwoods here in Sand Springs, just outside of Tulsa. They don't always have the Kendall and QS. The other brands are always there, but Kendall & QS seem to come & go. Sometimes they have Pennzoil, sometimes they don't. Must just be buying whatever they feel like at the time.

CONOCOPHILLIPS UPGRADES SELECTED CONVENTIONAL
MOTOR OILS TO SYNTHETIC BLENDS FOR ILSAC GF-4
Major Lubricants Provider Embraces "Good Just Got Better" Strategy with Massive
Upgrade Beginning with its 5W-20 and 5W-30 Grade Oils

HOUSTON, August 3, 2004 - ConocoPhillips Company, a leading global petroleum company and the fourth largest lubricants supplier in the U.S., today announced the company will upgrade selected conventional motor oils to synthetic blends, beginning immediately with its 5W-20 and 5W-30 mainline conventional oils. The robust product upgrade affects all four of ConocoPhillips' "Family of Brands," including Kendall, Phillips 66, 76 and Conoco motor oil brands. The initiative began as the company commenced reformulating its products to meet the latest ILSAC GF-4 specification. According to Scott McQueen, director of automotive products for ConocoPhillips Lubricants, the new synthetic blend oils feature strategic enhancements that go far beyond the standard industry requirements to ultimately provide the oil consuming marketplace with higher quality, premium oils at a competitive, conventional motor oil price.

"GF-4 opened the door for us to utilize our strong base oil technology and consider a strategic upgrade of our products," McQueen announced at a press event for industry trade media held in Houston, near the ConocoPhillips headquarters. "We leveraged this opportunity to evolve our motor oils and introduce a better, synthetic blend product that not only provides the best value in the marketplace, but also affords tremendous advantages to our Marketers, installers and consumers."

ConocoPhillips will enable the installer to offer a better value by providing synthetic blend quality oils at conventional motor oil prices. Extending that value to their customers can help installers increase their car counts.

"Given the needs of today's engines, we believe that good is no longer good enough," adds McQueen. "We're excited to offer fast lubes, repair shops, tire stores and car dealers an opportunity to capitalize on this strategy, because it offers them a significant advantage in the marketplace and provides their customers peace of mind in a time of changing specifications."

"This value proposition truly establishes ConocoPhillips as an industry leader," said Leigh Powell, owner of Town & Country Fast Lube, Sand Springs, OK. "The company has a history of introducing innovative advancements, and is once again giving customers the best value in the marketplace. I'm proud to have my business affiliated with ConocoPhillips because I know I'm providing premium products for my customer."

The company also envisions that the conversion of these conventional oils to synthetic blends will enable Marketers to gain marketshare by offering their customers, including installers, the best valued, premium product available to the marketplace. Positioning ConocoPhillips' new synthetic blends against competitive, conventional GF-4 products would naturally give its Marketers a competitive edge that would help increase business, the company concludes.

Consumers who use the new ConocoPhillips 5W-20 and 5W-30 oils will enjoy improved performance at a better value. They will gain all of the performance advantages associated with ILSAC GF-4 including enhanced fuel economy, emission systems protection, deposit and oxidation control. They also will enjoy the benefits of synthetic blend oils, including improved viscosity and oxidation control beyond that of GF-4, better low temperature flow properties, improved engine cleanliness and reduced oil consumption. The following ConocoPhillips products are included in the upgrade:

-- Kendall GT-1® High Performance Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil
-- Kendall GT-1® High Performance Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil
-- Phillips 66 TropArtic® Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil
-- Phillips 66 TropArtic® Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil
-- 76 Super Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil
-- 76 Super Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil
-- Conoco Super All Season Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil
-- Conoco Super All Season Synthetic Blend SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil

The new 5W-20 and 5W-30 synthetic blend oils will become available August 16, 2004. The product upgrade will be supported by an integrated marketing campaign that includes trade media advertising, direct mail and collateral. ConocoPhillips intends to convert its 10W-30 grade oils by spring 2005.

I doubt the other makers will stand still for this . They all will be good oils IMO . Just some engines will make them look bad

Don't forget the white bottle 5w-30 Formula Shell . Some analysis's of it comes in in good engines will probably attract some attention .

If the different brands of oils from one large oil company is intended for the same quality level and price point, why not use the same formula? I can see different formulas in oils for differing price points, i. e., Shell's Pennzoil and Shell's Wolf's Head.

It is appearing that the oil companies are using blends as the economical way to get GF-4 performance. Perhaps they're blending Group I or lower quality Group II base oil with some Group III as a "correction fluid" instead of using Group II or II+ which might be in short supply and cost more. ConocoPhillips is the U.S. distributor for a Korean source of Group III base oil.

I understand what your saying but the data sheets are available for those new Conoco/Phillips oils and none of them are the exact same that I can tell to include the 20wts .

They do meet a new and previously unheard of GM 5w-20 spec though

Is there some change coming to Formula Shell 5w-30?

This is going to get interesting. From a marketing standpoint, the other manufacturers will be pressured to respond with their own "blend" xw-30 oils.

Cool...

Just did my first oil change with the Trop Artic last night. Put a new Baldwin on, filled my baby up with the Trop...... So far so good. Did notice more start up noise that usual this morning though. I'll report back in a couple of weeks. Planning on doing a UOA when it's time to change again.

Hmmmm They don't carry the Kendall at the other Atwoods I've been to . The one south of OKC has Amsoil two stroke oil of some kind which I thought was odd to see there .One would think all the stores would carry the same oils but they do carry Mystik . It's a big seller here and there are guys racing with that oil .

Here the new MSDS hot off the press for the 5w-20 and 5w-30 Trop Artic . Looks like a fairly good amount of group III compared to other OTC blends from last year .
