personal oil consumption test different oils

Hi guys, I just wanted to share my personal experience with oil consumption or burn-off with different kind of oils (all gm specs 4718m synthetic) with my 2005 cadillac cts with right now 113k on the odometer. The engine is the 3.6l vvt non-DI auto transmission.

Each oil has been treated the same (a lot of idling, highway and city driving) since I do almost the same driving pattern to visit customers each 2 months. I drive about 1000 to 1500 kms per week. I just changed the oil 2100 kms ago with Mobil 1 5w30 and it still on the full mark, it didn't move.

Mobil 1 5w30: 1 qt per 5-6k miles (approx. 8000-9500 kms)
Mobil 1 10w30: 1 qt per 600 miles-1k miles (1000-1500 kms)
Pennzoil Platinum 5w30: 1 qt per 2,5k miles approx. (4000 kms)
Pennzoil Platinum 10w30: 1 qt per 2k miles approx. (3000-3400 kms)

I have the used oil analysis for the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and the Mobil 1 5w30 and it seems that its the same wears with both oil. The only difference is the tbn since I dont add the same amount of oil between oil change with Mobil 1 5w30.

Is there a reason why my car drinks oil like I drink orange juice with the Mobil 1 10w30 ? I think I'm going to stay with Mobil 1 5w30 since I have to add less top-off oil and get approx. the same results.

I want to know your opinion with that.

I've long had a theory that some engines will burn thicker oils faster than thinner oils (the rings don't remove as much thick oil from the cylinder walls on the downstroke), but that big of a difference between two 30-wt oils is really odd. You also show a slightly higher consumption of Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 than Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, but certainly not as extreme. I'd be tempted to discard the Mobil 1 10w30 measurement as a fluke unless you could repeat it a time or two.

Mobil 1 10w30 is thinner than 5w30 at both 40 and 100 degrees celcius.

But that variation is wild. I'd discard the Mobil 1 10w30 as well. I wouldn't try it again unless you're really curious.
