VW 502/505 spec is necessary. It should explicitly state it on the bottle.
Pretty sure the only Ultra grade that meets the Passat's specs is the 5w-40.
Yep...you need VW 502(Petro)/505(Diesel) specs which PU Euro 5W-40 meets.

so the back of the oil jug has to say, vw505?
It doesnt have to say that, but if you want to go the factory interval you need decent oil. If you were going 5k, maybe you could use another high quality full synthetic, but if its gonna be 10-12k youll need the 502/505. Mobil 0/40 meets 502/505, BMW LL-01, Porsche A40, and Mercedes 229.3, not sure about 229.5
The problem with those motors is the fuel dilution, so you need something to be able to stand up to that.

Great oil, cant comment on its lifespan though. Id play it safe with 5k, but Im sure people can confirm a longer interval.
Google VW 502 00 or VW 505 00 and you will find the complete list of oils that are suitable for your Passat.
