I have a question regarding this oil. I have a 03 Suburban that I normally ran Mobil 1 Truck and SUV in except for the last 2 oil changes. When I did my last change my 5 gallon waste bucket was full so I left the drain oil in my pan. I went last night to change the oil on my wife car and when I emptied the old PP in to my waste bucket there was a layer of thick black layer left on the bottom on the drain pan which looked like a sludge film. I could turn the pan upside down and it would not pour out of the pan not even the hot drain oil removed it from the pan when I poured the oil into the bucket. This oil has been in the pan for about 4 or 5 month know. The oil had 6,000 mile on it when I changed it. My truck is coming up on its next oil change and should I be worried about this.
Could this be what the PP has cleaned out of the motor or a problem with the oil.

Does your pan get CLEANED every drain (assuming there's room in your bucket)? Or does it have a snap-off lid that you happened to see this once when you finally dumped it? 4 or 5 months is a long time for old used oil to sit in a pan, open or not, I don't think it's too unreasonable for stuff to have settled out of it after all that time. Bet this could happen with any used oil..

It was clean before I did the oil change. I normally prop the oil drain pan up and let it drain into the bucket till the next oil change. The drain pan has a cover on it that I put on when it is full so it does not get spilled.
I have done this when I used Mobil 1 Truck and SUV and never had this happen.

Sitting there that long probably caused the solids (mostly carbon and fuel fragment particles and maybe some additives like VI improvers) to settle. Gravity would act like a slow acting centrifuge. If your used Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil sat that long and the layer didn't form it possibly indicates that it has better dispersant ability than PP or PP has more VI improvers in it. I really doubt that this is due to PP cleaning out your engine that had used Mobil 1 Truck and SUV because motor oils are pretty lousy active cleaners and M1 is good at keeping a clean engine clean. Bottom line: this would turn me off to PP for future use but I would NOT drain it early.

I have a bucket where I dump all the oil from my family's vehicles. Recently I emptied it into quarts for transport to an oil recycling center. At the bottom of the big bucket was a thick film that wouldn't pour out (like glue/syrup). So, that sounds fairly similar to your situation.

I wonder whats going on with that? Maybe we should be changing our oil sooner than we think.

Originhacker, did that happen with GC, Amsoil 5w30 HDD or similar super oil? This is interesting. I only noticed this with oil from my lawn mower and figured it was due to the lack of oil filter on the mower. Now it sounds like this can happen with synthetic oils used in car engines too.

My drain pan and buckets typically sit for a few months at a time before disposal. This 'sludge' has been evident every time I've gone to dispose of it, no matter the oil used... and I've tried many: Pennzoil Plat, M1, TropArtic, Chev Supr, etc.

It's seperation and settlement. The lighter liquid pours out quickly, then the 'sludge' slowly pours out. No worries with PP, based on used oil analysis here. If you are worried about the oil or your engine, send in a sample for analysis.

JAG - I did not notice it with my oil (Amsoil, GC). I change my oil every 3,000 miles (shhh) so it is pretty clean.

As soon as I started changing my parent's oil (conventional) and my sister's oil (conventional) - noticed it right away. They both like to push things or they forget. My mom even hired me to change several of her friend's cars (black oil)

- so ... the sludge came from all of their vehicles I believe. Oil bucket only been sitting for a few months too.

Thanks for the info OriginHacker. That is good to hear that your oils didn't develop this nasty layer. Imagine an engine that sits for a long time...the oil pan could fill up with that ________ like the oil containers can. Seems to me that if one sees this layer in the oil container, something should be done about it: either shorter OCI or better oil.
