I was doing some search and lo and behold I find amsoil's comparison test..

http://www.synthetic-motor-oil-change-and-filters.com/amsoil_articles/amsoils-big-competitors/

Curiously, Pennzoil dino places last or somewhere close to last in some of those tests (see charts for pennzoil with purebase) like TBN, NOACK, FourBall wear scar test etc. Granted, these tests were based on SL grade I think and not SM. Comparo in text is here

http://www.performanceoiltechnology.com/AMSOIL and the Competition.htm

Pennzoil's data sheet
http://www.pzlqs.com/Tech/Pdsheet/DomesticMarketing/EngineOils/pdf/Multigrade.PDF

I am just curious if it really matters given a short OCI.

BTW, I could not find any UOA on this dino for 10w30 which is currently in the belly of my beast. Yes the one that comes in 5qt yellow jugs

which says SM/GF4 so less phosporus/zinc.

For whatever reason, I am getting better mpg on 10w than 5w homebrew I had before...

My comments on these 4 year old test results for Pennzoil 10W-30

Thin-Film Oxygen Uptake - Actually an impressive show of the ability of this 10W-30 to resist oxidative breakdown.

Hi Temp, Hi Shear - Exactly the number listed on the GF-3 data sheet . A very common HTHS for a GF-3 dino.

Noack Volatility - Again, a very good result. Curren data sheet lists 10.9 and is among the lowest GF-4 Noack for a dino.

Pour Point - -37C is a very average number.

Total Base Number - Most GF-4 Dino's run 7-8 TBN.

Cold Cranking Viscosity - Again, a very middle of the road result. Go with a 5W-30 for cold temperatures.

Four Ball Wear Test - Amsoil normally runs this test at a higher rpm & load than any other published results. The 1800 rpm & 40 kg load plus the 100C temps make this more of a test of the quality of the ZDDP!

And why does Mobil Drive Clean, what most would describe as a very average GF-3 dino, generate a smaller wear scar than Mobil 1 SuperSyn?

My best advice is to just view the various Amsoil testing for entertainment value & don't try to evaluate any particular oil based on these test rankings.

Pennzoil suppposedly (I have not tested!) has a lower virgin TBN than most but holds TBN very well. The real test is % of TBN it retains instead of absolute number.
