First post ever, here goes nothin.... Sent the wife to pickup oil and filter while at wally world. I wanted pennzoil high mileage 5w30, she brought home a 5 quart jug of pennzoil ultra. and would you know it she lost the reciept frown. It's been 5k since i changed the oil in the "baron". Still full, but its pretty dirty, which scares me because the extended guard filters are suppose to hold 2x the amount of dirt. This will only be the second oil change since i bought the car.should i go ahead and us the ultra since i have it and let it flush it out good , or save it for the highlander and get a different hm oil? It didnt leak when i bought it, but it started smoking( white) a bit at startup and if i did alot of stop and go traffic. Im just worried this stuff will shrink the seals or knock something loose. could i add some engine honey or bars leak as a precaution?

My opinion..... I`d save it for the Hinghlander. BTW, that`s the Mitsubishi motor right? They were known for smoking. I cant remember what the fix for it was though.

welcome Ultra would be great for any cleaning that is required. You could always switch back to HM if any leaking develops after this OCI.

you are correct sir. The mitsubishi 3. slow had valve guide problems , but those were corrected in 92, but valve stem seals are still a prob. I bought the car for 500 bucks from an older lady that let her son take car of it. A nd by take care of it he put orriely 10-40 in it and a quart of lucas stabilizer. ran quiet but i was a slug and got bad mpg. So much air in the brakes i had to have it towed ( couldnt believe he let his mom drive with [censored] brakes!!!) but 90 bucks later , shes as good as new thanks to new wheel cylinders, mobil oil, and redline si-1( PFM in a bottle!!} grin

I'd just use it and then switch back to whatever you want. It's a good oil, won't hurt anything.

If it was a lesser oil i would do that, but its at least worthy of the highlander. I hate going to wall mart, plus closest one is 12 miles away.. i live half a block from oriellys, so ill save time and gas and just see what specials they have this month. Its just my daily driver, prolly wont see more than 8k in a year. so full syn is kinda overkil, but the cleaning ability of ultra intrigued me. I could exchange it for mobil 1 hm i guess ... tempting

assimilate your very convincing, ill change it on sunday.

You won't be cleaning too sudden with the Ultra. Leaving it in a year may be exactly what's needed to get rid of the Lucas Stabilizer plus any other accumulations it might have. If it uses any, you can always add Pennzoil YB or HM. YB cleans really well also. Sounds like a decent buy for $500!

Put in a PEA cleaner while you are at it. Some folks here think it's a good idea to do it before your oil change, which in this case I might agree with.

I would use the Pennzoil Ultra, it's a good oil with good cleaning abilities. If the engine doesn't leak now, it shouldn't start leaking because of the Pennzoil.

Btw, it sounds like your wife knows something about oils. Did she really just buy the wrong oil ..........

ran gumout regane through the fuel about 3 weeks ago, so i should be good.

In this case...I would grab the 5-quart jug of whatever 5W-30 is the cheapest (probably WM's Super Tech), any filter except the orange Fram, and forget it. I watched several Caravan taxis wind up over 400,000 miles on Mitsu 3.0's...and none of them ever saw anything but whatever bulk 5W-30 the company got the cheapest!

I'm sure the car would make it to 250k just fine on any 5w30, but how WELL will it run while its getting to that milestone. That's why I preffer mobil and pennzoil, id also use castrol or valvoline if I found a good deal. Also, taxi companies usually maintain their fleet well, I. Have 18 years and 139k miles of unknown history in this car. So anything that excels at cleaning and or seal conditioning helps me sleep at night. Call me OCD, but that's just how I am

I ran it for over a year in my '96 3800 Camaro (180k+ at the time) with no problems. Its a very clean engine to begin with so I didn't notice any darker than usual oil like some notice.

They didn't maintain all that well. Going 5-6K on oil changes was common enough I drove one car that had 580,000 miles on it...it was a Town Car, and with those miles, it had no trouble sailing along at 85+MPH running between Boston & Albany. It ran perfectly, no bad noises & minimal oil consumption.
