UOA by Oil Analyzers Inc.

Driving conditions: Oil in use since Sep 2010; 7 mile daily commute each way; spirited driving with a few WOT’s here and there on days where I have a 30 minute drive. In October, a trip to RI and to the White Mountains of NH (fun mountain driving). Most of my consumption is usually on trips if I’m driving on the Interstate at steady highway speeds. Temps down into the single digits this past winter. Wear looks pretty good, IMO, although I did only go 767 miles after the last quart of make-up oil.

My last uoa is here.
The last quart of make-up oil used was PU 5W-30. Went to the local Ferrari dealer and they didn’t even sell PU 5W-40 since they use the Quaker State version. Ended up going to Wal-Mart to get PU 5W-30.

Comments: Lubricant and filter change is suggested if not done at sampling time; Infared results indicate NITRATION is significantly high; Viscosity is SLIGHTLY LOW

Equipment make: Subaru
Equipment model: 2.5L Turbo
Oil use interval: 5,997 miles
Oil type & Grade: Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40

Miles on unit: 105,639
Air filter: Amsoil Ea panel filter
Oil filter: Mobil1 EP

I’m a little concerned about the nitration, but there really isn’t much change over the past four OCI’s. In between the run on SSO and M1 0W-40, there was one run on Red Line 5W-30 which I didn’t have a uoa done on since it was right after a turbo failure at ~80,000 miles.

As many of you know, Subaru's OCI on this engine is 3,750 miles due to clogging of the turbo oil line screen. My failure was shortly after I received a P0011 (camshaft timing over advance), but the tech said that all screens were clear. It should have been since that turbo only had 10-12k miles on it. I’ve been much more conscious of taking it easy until the oil is warm and cooling down after my 7 mile commute.

Considering switching to Red Line or Motul since I can get $100 off with my Subaru credit card rewards. A Subaru dealer in PA carries Red Line and one in MD carries Motul. I’m thinking the esters in Red Line, 300V, or X-Lite might be ideal. I’m also thinking of just going with Motul Eco-nergy 5W-30 because of the high price of fuel!

Yeah, before 50k I didn't have any consumption. After that it was 1 qt every 7-8k miles and increased to 2 qts. Broke it in by the book, which is a little conservative in hindsight.

Like I told you before. Your running it too hard. Try some M1 and top it up more often. Try to stay outta the motor so much.

Oh, should have used coding. I believe the first quart was added when I got back from RI/NH. That's the way these turbos can be. I didn't have any measurable consumption before the trip, and consumed one quart in one weekend.

OCI's on the previous runs were 6k on the M1 and 7.5-8k on the SSO. Na is because I left the SSO in during the first turbo replacement (seal issue, not a blown turbo).

Be a trailblazer, and try some 0W-20, like Dr Haas.

Yeah maybe I should go thinner instead of thicker! I actually ran Eco-nergy 5W-30 (10 cst's) one winter and it held up nicely on a 6k run. Of course, Doc Haas's oil sumps are the size of my gas tank

and his 0W-20 probably has an HTHS better than most xW-30's.

How much M1 was consumed during that interval? While I really like this PU 5W-40, I'd probably just go back to M1 since it's a lot cheaper and easier to get.

Consumption with M1 was about 1.5 qts and OAI does not charge additional for TBN, Nitration, and Oxidation.

It seems that OAI offers a bit more than Blackstone, for less money ($22.45 vs $25.00). Makes me wonder why BStone is more popular around here than OAI?

Maybe because of the big Blackstone banner? That's why I stuck with OAI even though I'm not currently running Amsoil. More bang for the buck.

That will be interesting! I'm still trying to decide what to run next.

No, not at all.

Maybe I should re-think this "extended drain" thing and do the manufacturer recommended 3,750 mile interval. Here's a uoa on PU 5W-30 from a modified WRX posted at nasioc. 263 WHP/298 WTQ. Lots of short trips and a run at the Tail of the Dragon.

Not bad for an Energy Conserving oil, IMO! TBN, oxidation, and nitration would have been helpful.

6k on the M1 0W40 and its TBN was down to 1.99 ! My recollection from other UOAs here is that the 0W40 generally has better TBN retention than what you experienced. Did you do some severe driving during the 0W40 use?

The PU 5W30 seems to be a bit less prone to shearing than the PP 5W30, doesn't it?
