Anyone using Pennzoil Syn in 10W-30?? What do you think.

Please don't tell me about the Grp III thing. I know the story.

Perceprtions??

A few years ago......I got a good deal on a couple cases of the pennzoil synthetic 5w30. I couldn't tell the difference between it, and the havoline synthetic I usually ran. Both were GIII's though.

I used it in my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.8L engine for 87,000 miles. Worked great for me in the cold Wisconsin winters. I changed it every 5,000 to 6,000 miles.

I am now using the 5W20 in my new Ford and the 5W30 in my wife's Subaru and my son's Nissan. Same change interval as above. All run smooth, quite, and start easy in this very cold winter we are having. I have not done any UOA on any of them as I have not felt the need to do so. I service all my cars as required and my oil changes are well within what I feel this oil will do.

I heard somewere that it has better cold cranking properties than Mobil 1. I am using Mobil 1 5w-30 now and am not impressed with the cold cranking performance in cold weather. We had some -20 to -25f temps and it seemed to turn over like it had dino 5w-30 in it. I might try Pennzoil synthetic next winter.

The cold cranking problem you mentioned is more likely your battery struggling to turn the engine in the cold then the Mobil 1.

It's been super mild here this Winter, so I can't say 100%, but I'm just now trying M1 and I too have not been impressed with starts.

New battery too.

I think my old syn started easier for sure.

i have a new 1 year old 1100 cold cranking amp battery. Mobil 1 seems as good as any 5w-dino oil i have used in the past years.

I just noticed penzoil synthetic on sale for $4. I don't know how much you're paying for it, but I can get Mobile 1 for that much...
