over the years i have heard nothing but negative things about pennzoil, causes sludge, dries up seals, buildup, has wax in it, etc.but i see good results in the oil analysis reports.just curious if anyone has opinions........

Guess it depends how old you are. I grew up hearing the same things but all the latest data shows Pennzoil to be putting out a very good product.
P.S. Quaker State had the same reputation when I was a kid also.

Pennzoil dino is one of the 3 best available dino's along with Delvac and Chevron acccording to most people and UOA's here. Old wives tales take a long time to die away.

Call it folklore. Its just one of those things that goes with the territory. The differance between oils is the additive package. Any oil will do the job as long as it is changed regularly.

most of them 'old wives tales' about bad oil came from the 70's when 10w-40 first came out and was 'badly' formulated, sludging, breaking down and generally wasting engines away.

I don't want to turn this thread into a high mileage thread; however, I used it exclusively on our 1988 Camry (since new) and the car just turned 300,000 trouble-free miles. I realize this is just one case, but I would say it is pretty good oil..:)

Pennzoil in Australia has an image of beeing one level up form all else. It is very widly used and like I said people have the feeling there using something just that bit better in Pennzoil when compared to the same weight and rating oil in other brands. However with Shell now doing there belding and using Shell Base Oil there have been a few die hard Pennzoil users leving camp, but who knows, it may be a better product for it.

It's just like fram filters...the fact is most people use them, and think they are the best, even though they have no idea why.

Only bad thing I've heard about pennzoil recently (Two years) was that a fellow z car enthusiast put some of it in his car (same weight and filter as previous oil) and his oil pressure was lower and water temp was slightly higher. I'm guessing he normally uses Castrol GTX.

This is funny given that one element that always made Pennzoil "special" was ShellVis, Shell's extremely shear stable VI improver.

Francis it's the exact opposite. I had a long talk to Shell tech re basestocks and additive packages. Most Pennzoil here in now Shell basestock but Pennzoil additive package which Shell tech agreed was better than that which they use. Surprising honesty there for a change. Timken testing by us tends to confirm this eg. Helix Ultra 5W40 syn is no match for some Pennzoil dino's re anti-wear which was surprising and retested many times. PM me for more info..s
