Can someone tell me if the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40 is a group III base? I am using it for my Auto-RX rinse phase and if it's group III it should be OK. I know most of them have changed but was unsure about the 5W-40. Using it in my 02 Land Rover.

Thanks,

John

I read some of his replies and he mentioned PP as a good oil to use as it is a Group III. Just was unsure if this grade was.

I got it at the local Pennzoil 10 minute Oil Change Center.

I've read somewhere on BITOG that Pennzoil Platinum 5w40 is re-badged Shell Helix Ultra, which is a Group III oil.

Johnny might know for sure. He used to work for Pennzoil.

From what I've read, a good rinse oil is not a matter of Group 3 or PAO (both are very non-polar), it's a matter of whether the oil has significant ester content. The esters interfere with Auto-RX's esters. PP doesn't use significant amounts of esters from what I've heard so that's why I think any PP is ok as a rinse oil.

Thanks for the answer about where you got this hard to find oil.

I wouldn't use any synthetic for an ARX clean or rinse. Just go get some Super Tech 5w30. No need to waste expensive oil if its going to be drained quickly.

This will be in for 2,000 - 2,500 miles. Money isn't really the issue, only the best oil that will work with this application.

JAG - didn't see the cost ? I had them change it. The full service with 7 quarts was $63. The 7th was to use as a topoff if needed. Used my own WIX Gold Filter. It was 24 degrees yesterday and decided to have someone else do it for me this time.
