I have a 2016 KIA Sorento, with the doomed GDI engine, and almost 52k miles currently use the Penzoil 5w-20 Platinum, and I am wondering if going to Kirkland 5w-30 would be ok or any difference. ? TIA

You could probably even go up to 10w-30 or 5w-40 or higher depending on your ambient temperature range. Check your owners manual.

I wouldn't bother with 15w-40 or 20w-50, I'm not a big fan of diesel oil in gas cars.

I tried Kirkland 5w-30 in my Sportage with 2.4 GDI engine and it burned oil from very start. Went back to Pennzoil 5w-30 and lately 0w-30 and it burns very little. Engine didn't burn any till about 90k miles in.

These engines are prone to fail no matter what you use or maintenance interval. Any 5W-30 at 3K-4K is all you can do. My son has a 2019 Santa Fe w/2.4L Theta II (52K.) Who knows? I change the oil every 4K w/OEM filter.

Brief summary of what's wrong with these engines? Engineering, material?
Manufacturing issue. Basically, debris not cleaned out properly from the machining process.

There is a million threads on here about it, plus google will give you enough material on it to keep you up all night....

Soft metallurgy.... mainly connective rod bearings most times deliver the fatal blow.
Oil rings issues eventually drive oil consumption upwards..... sometimes a quart in 350 miles.

Say Adios to the 5w20 and either 10w30 or 0w40 is what I recommend next. Stick with the SP Oil Standard to lessen carbon / soot buildup. Try to find VOAs / UOAs here that show sub-1400 Calcium and Magnesium +500.
I like to see the Phos / Zinc ZDDP levels at least 1300 total. 1500 is more ideal. The cst@100 for Virgin oil at 10-11+ and the UOA total finishing at 8.5-9+.

These are my gauges. Others here may not agree.... as usually the case here at BITOG. Everyone has a different policy oon what's best for the sub-par Korean four cylinders of Theta 2 design.
