Mahzurrah!
A search didn't reveal much. My True Value has had Peak 10w40 in SL for ages but I thought it was just old stock as they don't sell much oil. Now my Dollar General is loading up with Peak to replace it's former STP and the 10w40 is SL there also.

So is Peak 10w40 SL higher in ZDDP like Defy? Or is it just low grade older stuff? The Peak 5w30 that came in with it is SN rated as you'd expect.

That's Dollar General brand, and I agree no one should touch it.

However they also sell Pennzoil conventional and Pennzoil High Mileage, Castrol GTX and HM and now Peak. I use coupons to get oil cheap there so I'm curious about the Peak.

10w-40 isnt an energy conserving grade of oil and most likely cant make the SN specs. Does not mean it's a bad oil (in fact it has a cult like following with the BITOGers) I would use it but the 5w works fine for my cars.

DEFY in 10w-40 is rated SL as well. I believe the 5w and 10w are SMs. All old specs.

What vehicle are you using this grade in by the way?

Peak has a website, and the website does have a PDS.
Their MSDS lists the 10W-40 as API SN/GF-5.
The PDS lists the 10W-40 as API SN without the GF-5 qualification.
Viscosity numbers are given, along with VI, sulphated ash and NOACK, but nothing on additive content beyond the SA number.
Interestingly, if you buy the 5W-20, 5w30 or 10w30 in bulk, you get a syn blend, which is not true in package sizes up to a drum.
Anyway, either Peak offers two different 10W-40s, or you're looking at old stock.
Either way, there are some decent Peak used oil analysis here, so I'd use it with confidence on shortish drains.
Having written all of this, I believe that PQIA has a VOA of this oil.
You might check their site.

Thanks. Was curious as to the ZDDP levels in the SL. I thought the hardware store just had old stock but DG just brought it in and the 10w40 is SL, go figure.

I didn't recall a Peak 10w40 on the PQIA site, I'll go check there.

EDIT: It was just the 5w30.
