parts oil filter is now shorter true or false

I have been getting oil filters from Nissan for years, its a 2003 Pathfinder V6 VQ35de engine and they always gave me a long filter , now the oil filter I just installed to day is shorter , is this OK to use or what. they parts guy says it the newest updated filter out for all Nissan's with the VQ35DE motor? what gives here?

The new nissan filter is equal to a purolator p14612. Shorter but perfectly fine to use.

Perhaps Nissan has now consolidated to the smallest filter that fits which as mentioned is the 14612/6607 size. That said, I wouldn't take the parts guy's word as gospel. Many quick lubes have consolidated/downsized the 14610/7317 size to the shorty 14612/6607. The two sizes are 'basically' interchangeable but I prefer the slightly longer 14610/7317 size to the thimble size shorty for the increased media area. Some Nissan's have listed/spec'd the 14612 size, some the 14610 size, but I've never heard or seen a Nissan/Infiniti application that didn't accommodate the latter.

But yeah the shorty will be ok, just wouldn't be my preference over the 14610/7317 size.

You are correct, many OE's and parts houses/quick lubes are consolidating the 7317 filter size to 6607 to simplify sku count. That said, I run the 7317 Ultra on my turbocharged 350z VQ35 even though it calls for a 6607.
